Barn Owl at a display in Kidderminster by Midland Birds of Prey Rescue, back in 2008.
You do get wild Barn Owls around these parts, and during the very cold December 2010 some people (though sadly not me) spotted them flying by day, which is very unusual.
Photo taken with an Advent MP51, of all things. Just occasionally it could come up trumps!

Ooh, neat. I remember your posting this, or one like it, back when you took the photo. Barn owls are such lovely birds. They look so fluffy, and kind of sleepy, and it's only when you look at their feet that you really remember that these are actually predators. That doesn't stop me wanting to pet them, though.
The only time I've ever seen an owl fly during the daylight was when I accidentally scared a couple out of my old barn. They were up in the rafters which, this being an old tobacco barn, weren't actually all that far off the ground. I felt sorry for having scared them, but it was kind of cool to watch them fly. It's funny, too. I just made a post about hearing owls a few days ago, and then last weekend I managed to spot one as it flashed across the road as I was driving home. It was a mere brown blur in my headlights so I couldn't tell you what kind it was, but that was pretty neat, too!

If it hoots, it'll be a Tawny Owl, since that's their most distinctive feature. They can be quite light -- here's a good example.
