One of my relatively rare non-furry, non-wildlife posts -- though in fact there is the odd duck to be seen if you squint. =:P This is the River Severn in the centre of Bewdley on Christmas Day 2010. This was during the coldest December in central England since 1890, although well wrapped up and with the sun shining it was actually quite an enjoyable walk. =:)

Well, it does depend on which edge! On the far side it wasn't too bad along the road -- I know, since I walked all along it! On the near side, the path runs behind the trees (behind me) so you don't get that close anyway. The ice on the right, incidentally, is the river -- just frozen! It was such a nice day, despite the serious cold. You may remember that I went back there on Boxing Day, to see the river when it was completely frozen across, and on that occasion it was -6 °C in the middle of the afternoon and there was no sun at all, so it was perishing. =:P
I can't really remember much about Christmas 2002 (no emails to you or LJ archive to check back on, so it can't have existed =;) ) but I managed to find some stats about it. And there was indeed a very cold spell at the end of Nov/start of Dec, which would have coincided with the market. Now, here's the killer fact: Boxing Day this time around was something like eight degrees colder than the coldest day during that 2002 market! =:o
I love the photos you share of your town. They always make it seem like a really pleasant place, and I'm actually kind of jealous of your river. The creek that runs through my little town is rather badly polluted, and it looks (and smells!) like it. But even with its crust of ice and snow your river looks really pretty. And while I'm not really one for the cold, there's something kind of cool (harhar) about the idea of experiencing the coldest winter in better than a hundred years.
I do think I'm lucky to live here, and having the Severn flow through is certainly a big part of that. Of course there are plenty of less photogenic places in the town, though the riverside area really does look as nice as this in real life for the most part. As for the cold... well, I'm not really much of a one for any sort of extremes, hot or cold, but if we do have snow and ice then I do prefer it to do so properly. So often we have wet, slushy snow that turns to rain and thaws slowly giving a nasty, raw, murky day -- among my least favourite types of weather.
cloud cover is a great time to photograph actually. it filters the sun. everything isn't bright and over exsposed. you can set the settings on the camera to brighten things or dull them. cloud cover makes it easyer. take the boats pic I took. it was sunny and no clouds. the boats have glares and the white one is over exsposed a bit. the country life photo is almost perfect.
