Thank you very much for all the comments! *hugs*
All the other rabbits had presumably experienced roads before, but Stitchwort possibly hadn't, which is partly why he just froze?
Stitchwort is indeed less worldly-wise, though by comparison with the Sandleford veterans so are most rabbits! However, he was also badly affected by what happened with Pipkin -- see the end of chapter 5 in particular for that.
I'm guessing the Messenger was a train, from WD, but was the thing that killed Stitchwort a combine harvester, possibly?
Correct on the first part, but the thing in my story was one of those council street-sweeping machines, that have the revolving brushes on the front. The driver wouldn't have seen a little rabbit in the road, and so Stitchwort was swept into the works like a piece of rubbish and then (presumably) chewed up. It's a pretty horrific way to go, yes.
Hyzenthlay
Definitely, I very much wanted to give this chapter a warmer section as well, and also to show just how devoted Hazel and Hyzenthlay were to each other, as well as to their warren.
IIRC the Black Rabbit and El-ahrairah became one and the same?
Well... in the film, at the end, there's a sort of suggestion of that, but I don't think it's really supported by the books. I remember writing a little essay about it once, but I'm not sure I even convinced myself. =:P
