It was a very powerful chapter, I thought, and somewhat eerie too at times.
Thank you! I'm pretty pleased with this part, on the whole. I feel that the middle section of the story, from about here to around chapter 11, is the best part of it, actually.
Even [Bigwig] was moved to see Pipkin had survived after all.
Oh, yes. I think all the rabbits are very fond of Pipkin, and since I am as well I didn't really want to kill him off. And of course we know from the book how loyal he is to Hazel, so it all fits in very nicely. =:)
fight scenes aren't all that easy to write
No, and I usually try to avoid them as I'm not at all good at writing them. This one may be one of the best I've managed, so I'm glad that came across. As to the scream... well, a rabbit's scream is a pretty terrifying sound anyway, but you may be on to something. There is just the slightest suspicion here and there that Pipkin may have an echo of Fiver's abilities...
it was a close thing
Very much so. If Bigwig had disobeyed Hazel and killed Knapweed or Stitchwort, I think it would have been the end of him. Not because Hazel would have cast him out, because I don't think he would have done. But because when Bigwig had calmed down, he would have been so horrified with what he had done that he might well not have been able to stay at Watership; he'd have wandered off alone, and who knows what would have become of him then? So in that moment on the "very edge", in fact the entire future of the warren was in the balance.
And then that ending
A nice way to round off quite a dramatic chapter, wasn't it? *grins*
Thank you very much for the comments once again; I'm hugely enjoying reading them. =:)
