Spade animation test

Alrighty then... so this is the first animation that I have attempted to make for my as of yet un-named game. frankly, I don't even know if this animation will work on this site yet, so those of you who spot it on the "new submissions" on the FA home page... don't boo me just yet.
That said, if it does work... this is the idle animation for one of three main characters I have planned in my game. This little guy's name is Spade... part of a race of little ball shaped birds named peepits... and yeah, that is a military helmet on his head (er, body, er, whatever).
The peepit's themselves are somewhat militaristic. In fact, all of their names come from military technology or terms, with different "tribes" having names from a single military gimmick. For example, in Spade's tribe, all of the peepits are named after parts of artillery gear. Spade's name actually comes from the part of an artillery piece, called the "spade". The spade on an artillery gun is the spike or wedge that is dug into the ground when the gun fires, keeping the gun stable, and minimizing kickback from the massive shot these cannons made.
That said, Spade himself is going to be a fairly basic platform-shooter style of character. True to his roots, he carries around a bazooka that can load custom ammunition in order to foil various types of enemies and obstacles.
I should mention that the white thing dangling on the helmet is a lucky charm... an old playing card... and yes, it is the Ace of Spades card.
This tiny little looping animation is basically his "idle" animation, or what he does while standing still.
...I could probably draw a bigger image of Spade to give you a better idea of the critter, since it might not be obvious that he is a little chick with a world war II helmet and bazooka... but considering his style is deliberately cute and simple, it wouldn't be much more detailed than this anyway;)
feedback and advice on how to make good animated sprites would be appreciated, both for the sake of the game, and to better share them online!

So yes indeed... I do believe I am going to see about making this my avatar image for a while now:)
As for being my first attempt... yes indeed, it is my first attempt at an animation. That said, having studied animation techniques quite a bit, as well as doing a number of transformation projects that could be animated if I just added a couple of 'tween' frames into them... I technically have experience before doing this one.
...yeah, I am planning on giving the game a charming look, in the form of something between yoshi's island and sonic the hedgehog in style: hand drawn... but low enough resolution to look like classic sprites. similarly, the levels will be hand drawn, but I will keep in mind the hard edged, 3D geometrics that the classic sonic games had. That's the theory anyway... we will see If I can actually mesh those two styles well as time goes on... Spade's helmet is a good example though: I made the shading rough and scribbly, giving it a cartoony look, then gave it hard, shiny specular lighting on its highlights, giving it some illusion of 3D, rounded depth, not to mention accentuating its hardness as a helmet.
War! Never been so much fun!
Go up to your buddy
Kill him with your gun
Leave him laying in his uniform
Dying in the sun!
