Okay, Anonymous Writer here (Aka
TrickyChimera). This is the first story that I've worked on and published without Cobalt Raccoon's help. I mean sure he proofread it, but that's it. It's not very "Furry" persay, but I've seen stories that are similar to this one here. One example was written by
Jagrrr and a link is available in the warning. There's also some mentioning of coming out of the closet. If you don't like it, then (with all due respect) get over it. If you're insulted, know that this is a work of fiction made to be enjoyed by a small audience. If you're insulted, I honestly don't see how.
My name is Ashley Delton. No, I’m a guy. And yes, it’s a girl’s name, so you’d think that I was a girl. I get that a lot. It’s not my fault that our dad had a sick sense of humor. He had two boys and he gave us both girl names. It certainly doesn’t help either one of us be any more open with ourselves. But more about that later. My big brother’s name is (or rather was) Jessie. He doesn’t really go by that name anymore. This is his story…
Perhaps I should start at the beginning, but I’m not even sure when the beginning was. My story is the first, but that’s only because my big brother is now dead. Though dead is a bit of a strong word. That’s to say that he doesn’t exist anymore. Jessie had left behind only one record of what he had done and why he had done it. However, that record is part of my story. No, this is still his story, just my viewpoint of it.
It may have started at that dinner. It may have been before then, but that’s when I would like to start. My brother and I were having our monthly ritual of eating at Imperial Noodles. I live about four hours away for college and so I don’t get to eat with him very often. Being only two years apart, we were close. Very close. We’d shared everything with each other. Up to that point it was, almost everything. That day, I decided to tell him something that I haven’t told many people before. I hadn’t told most people because of my major studies.
“Jess, I’m gay.”
“Ooh-kay…,” Jessie stopped eating for a moment. He didn’t seem to be that phased by it.
“I’m serious.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Jess sighed and took a sip from his coke. God knows what he was thinking, “What about Mallory? Does she know?”
Mallory was my girlfriend for the past six years. We’ve had a long distance relationship going for three, but we were serious about marriage. We still are.
“I told her, but you know how she is.”
“I guess so,” he laughed, but kept on eating his beef fried rice.
“Don’t you care?”
“Hey man,” Jess raised his hands, “it’s your choice, not mine.”
We kept eating and laughing about what had been occurring between my brother and myself over the years. Specifically, we spoke about Mallory and the stories involving her. But if I told you even one of those stories, then I’d have to kill you, if you know what I mean. We joked a little longer, when Jess asked me specifically, “Do you plan on telling mom?”
“I’ve tried, but she thought that I was kidding.”
“Sounds like mom,” he laughed, “remember when I told her that I got suspended?”
“Yeah, she didn’t believe it for a second,” I remembered, “the next day she was telling you that you were going to be late if you didn’t get up.”
“Yeah, good old mom,” Jess paused, “Are you going to try again?”
“I don’t know,” I quietly finished my plate, “You don’t think that she’d… I don’t know… freak?”
“Ash, she loves you, no matter what interests you have,” Jess reached out for my hand, “you know that, right?”
“I guess so…”
“Don’t get me wrong, she’s not going to support it,” he laughed to himself again, “but she still loves you.”
“That’s cold.”
“You know what I meant.”
“Of course,” I knew, “I’m not going to give up on God just because of something like this.”
Yes, I’m a Christian and I’m gay. So sue me. I know how most people out there view Christians and Gay Christians, but this story is not about me or my faith, it’s about my brother.
“I’m going to try telling her again,” I nodded to myself, “will you be there with me when I do?”
“Of course,” Jess said, gulping to himself, “if you promise to come to my house afterwords.”
“What for?”
“I kind of want you to meet someone,” Jess took another drink from his coke.
“Girlfriend?”
“No, nothing like that,” Jessie waved his hands in the air, “it’s something else.”
“Why not before I tell mom?”
“You’ll see,” Jessie bit his lip and left it at that. I had forgotten about it completely. He never once mentioned it again. That was typical of my brother. He’d tell you once and expect you to remember it forever.
~~~~~~~
“Thanks for being there for me,” I patted Jessie on the back as we walked up to his apartment. It was about eight or nine months later. That night, I had told mom about my “feelings”. We established some very personal things about what happened. That’s the only reason that I will not reveal any details about that. All I will say is that it had gone smoothly and as Jessie had assured me that it would. It was now late into the night and Jessie had driven us home. He was nervous about something, but I was too focused on myself to notice.
“Anytime Ash,” Jessie smiled weakly, before he dashed up the stairs, “come on.”
“Wait up,” I followed him, but I wasn’t nearly as athletic as him. He could run on all fours if he wanted to. I’ve said that before and I meant it as a joke. He waited for me at the top of the stairs. His leg was bouncing as if he really needed to take a piss, so I didn’t think otherwise. He went to the door the moment that I had reached the last flight of stairs. He unlocked it quickly and looked back at me.
“You ready?”
“Ready for what?”
“You remember,” Jess twirled his hand at me, “You promised me that you’d meet someone.”
“Oh right,” I marked quotations in the air, “your friend.”
“Hey, I didn’t judge you. I supported you,” Jessie turned to go inside, “So please support me with this.”
I followed him inside shortly after. I didn’t see another living soul in his apartment. I looked, but all I saw was Jessie kicking off his shoes before gathering up some things. His laptop was the first thing that he went to get. The other thing that he had gotten was a custom made DVD. He put the DVD on his coffee table. He kept his laptop under his arm as he gave me a hug.
“So where’s your friend?”
“He’s already here,” Jess said, not letting go of me, “I just need to go wake him up.”
“Okay,” I hugged him back for a second or two, and then a minute longer, “seriously this is kind of awkward for me.”
“Sorry,” Jess stepped back, nearly dropping his laptop, “I’m just not sure if you’ll like me after you meet him.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“You’ll see,” Jess forced himself to breath, “wait for like five minutes and if I’m not back yet then just put in the DVD.”
“Why,” I tried to ask him.
“Just trust me,” he slipped into the back room.
Well, I did as Jessie asked of me. If I hadn’t listened, then maybe things would have turned out differently. I don’t know. Maybe then, I’d still have my big brother. I sat there for ten minutes, then ten more. I had no clue as to what my brother was doing in the other room. I figured that I had waited long enough and popped the disk in the player.
The menu was a little weird. The Title Menu listed “Good-bye”, “Instructions” and “Questions&Answers”. “Good-bye” was first so I figured that I should play it first. The screen flickered for a moment. The next thing that I saw was my brother. He was setting up a camera in front of a chair. He sat himself down and huffed for a moment.
“Hey Ash,” Jessie smiled, “if you’re watching this then congrads on telling mom. Knowing me, I must have already told you that, like sixty times by now. Next, I want to say that I’m so sorry about what I’m about to… or rather… what I’ve already done.”
“Done what,” I thought out loud.
“Of course, what am I saying,” Jessie laughed, “you wouldn’t know it yet, but I’m gone.”
My eyes widened.
“No, I’m not dead! Please, sit back down,” Jessie yelled, knowing me far too well, I sat back down as he continued, “I’m not dead, but I am gone. I’ve already made a list of questions that I know that you would have and have already tried to answer them as best as I can. I’m putting them in this DVD.”
‘This has to be some kind of joke’, I thought to myself.
Jess on the screen paused a moment to massage his eyes. He sighed another moment and continued, “No, this is not a joke. If I haven’t told you already, my friend is in the other room. What I haven’t told you is who my friend is. See, a while ago, I kind of got into hypnosis. The sessions helped me to relax and relieve myself of the stress of every day life. I really enjoyed them. It just felt so good to just sit back and not think for a while. You know? One day, I decided to try a different kind of hypnosis. You know, one of those transformation sessions?”
“What does this have to do with-”
“Be patient, I’m getting to the point,” the Jessie on the screen answered as if he was listening to me, “And yes, I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out. One day, I tried it. A dog transformation video. Oh god…”
The screen flickered and showed Jessie setting up the camera again. He was wearing different clothes this time. Some time must have passed between the two recordings. Jessie put his head in his hands as if he was remembering something embarrassing.
“How did I feel? I felt… I feel so free as a dog. I didn’t have any control over myself, but I didn’t care. I was a dog…,” this Jessie smiled to himself, “Dog’s don’t have a sense of responsibility. I want to try again, but I’ve got class in-”
The screen suddenly flipped back to the first recording. Jessie was nodding to himself this time. That smile he had in the last scene was gone. Frankly, I could tell that he was drained between these tapes.
“The burden was always gone as long as I was a dog. So I edited my own sessions, to give my dog self instructions. I don’t know why I did. I just wanted to experiment a bit I guess. With that, the stress of college was gone. I had myself study while I was in trance and then I wouldn’t stress about the tests later. Next, I used trance to get one or two chores done. Then I started going into trance for pretty much anything around the house.”
Jessie paused as if he was thinking that I’d say something about now, but changed his mind, “I’m telling you all this because, I’m losing it. I can’t live my own life anymore, Ash. I need Issy to do anything right. I just can’t get rid of Issy.”
“Issy,” I asked but Jessie continued ranting.
“I’m forgetting things that I shouldn’t forget. I’m not getting out as often as I should. Hell, most days I have off, I’m spending it eating, sleeping, and playing with dog toys that I keep hidden in my room. Even when I’m not in trance. I like being a dog, Ash, but it’s lonely. That’s why, I’m doing this.”
Jessie paused again as if he was expecting me to answer him. I didn’t even know what to think of what he was telling me.
“I’m serious Ash,” Jessie assured me as if he knew my answer, “Issy, come here.”
That’s when I heard light thumps and a jingling coming from the other room. Jessie came out of the back room, walking on all fours, and dressed in some shorts and a skin tight tee-shirt. He had a lite blue dog collar on his neck, I didn’t have time to pay it mind. His tongue was hanging limply from his mouth as he panted. I didn’t panic at first, because frankly, I figured it was all some kind of elaborate prank. Jessie didn’t seem to think that I would think so.
“Please don’t freak out,” I heard the TV shout at me, “This is the friend that I was talking about. My dog self, Issy. Say hello Issy…”
“Ra rooh,” Jessie howled with his butt wagging as if he had a tail. He smiled stupidly and stared at me as if he was waiting for something. I was still recovering from the shock of seeing my older brother act this way. Even for him, this was pretty drastic for a joke.
“Okay, joke’s over,” I said to Jess, “I didn’t believe it for a second.”
“He doesn’t understand how to speak, but I taught him to recognize certain words so that he will know what you want from him,” the Jess on screen continued. The Jess on the floor kept wagging his invisible tail, “Like now, when he’s being good all you really have to do is say, ‘Good boy’.”
At that command, real Jess’s smile got even wider and his eyes rolled into the back of his head. He tilted a little bit and stomped his foot down rapidly. He looked so stupid, but I sat back and let my brother continue to make a fool of himself. The Jessie on the screen tilted his head in the same direction as he shivered a bit, before he continued.
“It gives me… Issy,” Jess looked up at the screen, “great pleasure. Saying those words is like rubbing him behind the ear. He really likes being rubbed there. He also hates loud noises so please don’t yell at him too much either. I know because I recorded myself plenty of-”
“Come on Jessie,” I paused the DVD, “Do you really expect me to fall for this?”
Jessie didn’t answer me. He just stared at me and tilted his head. He was very good at this. He must have had months of practice. I had to catch him off guard if I was going to make him slip.
“Well, since you are a dog then you wouldn’t mind if I…,” I stood up to retrieve something that I knew was precious to my brother, “If I go and break your favorite mug.”
I found Jess’s “Filler Up!” mug sitting in his cabinet and lifted it up for him to see it. Jess gave me no reaction. He just sat there… as if he was just expecting me to do it. No, daring me to do it. Or that’s how I felt seeing him smiling and panting at me like he did. I had to do it. I tossed the mug in the air. I caught it in time. Still no reaction. He didn’t even flinch. He really wasn’t going to give me the satisfaction that he didn’t trick me.
“I’m serious,” I warned him, “I’ll do it.”
That’s when Jess stretched himself and yawned. Jessie smacked his lips a few times. He acted as if he was bored with me, hopped up onto the couch and laid down. That was the last straw. Something in me just snapped.
“Quit it Jess,” I hurled the mug at him.
For a split second, I thought that Jessie would, well at least try to catch the mug. He didn’t. He instead tried to keep from getting hit. He failed at I hit him square on the head. He stared at the fragmented mug, then looked straight at me. I knew that look. I’d seen it a thousand times when our father… Look, just trust me about this. It’s his story. Jessie looked at me like I was punishing him for something that he didn’t do. Even if he didn’t I was already convinced.
“Jess,” I asked slowly, “this really isn’t a joke, is it?”
Jessie didn’t answer me, he kept looking at me with those eyes. I swore that I’d never see him make those eyes again. That’s why I had… No, I wont get off subject. This is Jessie’s story. Still… I didn’t like that look. It made me remember some very dark times. The DVD said that Jessie, no Issy only understood a few key words. Still I had to tell Jess that I didn’t mean to… mean to…
I remember crying. Not much, I’m not a cry baby like when I was a kid. I just hoped that Jessie wouldn’t remember what I had done to Issy while he was under. Maybe forgive me for hurting him like that.
“Issy,” I had to play along, Issy looked to the ground, “look at me. Come here.”
Issy very tenderly stepped down from the couch. He still felt like he was in trouble, but he was obedient. He stopped a few feet away from me. Still I motioned for him to come closer. He obeyed without any real hesitation. I checked for damage while I could assuring him that I wasn’t going to hurt him again. Luckily, his skin wasn’t broken. Maybe a bit bruised, but he’s physically alright. Mom always said that we were hard headed.
“Issy, I’m sorry. You’re not in trouble,” I said as I pat my brother on the head. Issy seemed to understand exactly what I was telling him and became instantly slap happy again. He was about to lick me if I hadn’t stopped him. I figured that I might as well reward him, as strange as all this was, “good boy.”
Issy did that thing again. He was enjoying the attention he was getting from those imaginary hands. It was still very creepy for me to see my own brother like that. I took the time to pick up the pieces of his mug and hide the evidence. I had to tell Issy to stay only once and he stayed until I told him other wise. Whatever trance that my brother was under was extremely deep. When I returned to the couch, Issy hopped up next to me. He placed his head on the rest, ready for a nap. I figured that I might as well finish the DVD and let him sleep it off. Surely, he’d wake up as Jessie, right?
“-plenty of times,” Jessie continued, “I don’t know why our personalities are so different. I can only assume that Issy is the more innocent side of myself… A side that I didn’t get to be… growing up… I just kept it bottled up and Issy was born from it.”
Issy perked up when he heard his name. He was waiting for his master to give him a command, but Jessie continued on with his monologue.
“But I can get to that later with the questions section of the disk,” Jessie bit his lip, “the other commands are just the basics of dog training. Sit, lie down, roll over, play dead, but there are some commands that you just can’t teach a dog that I’ve taught Issy. You’ll learn about those in the instructions section though…”
Jess seemed to be scared about something. I could tell. He was avoiding what he wanted to tell me. The tape flickered again. This time Jessie was setting up the camera. I knew this day. Jessie had just gotten a bad hair cut that day. That was over a year ago. His clothes weren’t any different than the ones that Issy was wearing now.
“I got myself some tags today,” Jessie smiled, “the instructions on the video said that I would go deeper if I only I heard the jingle of these dog tags. See I picked the name Issy, because I remember the instructions telling me to pick the first name that came to my mind. Hehehe, but my mind was already blank… so the only words that came to my mind was ’my name is’. That’s it. Over and over again, All I could think was, ‘my name is’. I remember that it was my mantra to go deeper. So I decided to have it engraved right here.”
Jessie picked himself up and came closer to the screen, so that I could read the tags. Clipped to the end of the link was a pair of round tags. The first one read, “Issy”. The other one was left blank.
“See, I figured, why not? That way if I go in public with this trance thing people will be going ‘Issy serious?’ and ‘Issy real?’ Funny right,” Jessie flipped the tag over, “and on the back, I’ve even added a date for my rabies shots.”
Jessie laughed at himself again, but paused. He tapped on the other tag, “this tag however. I’m not sure what to put on here. Should I put my real name here. You know, in case I should escape the house and people think that I’m crazy?”
“Of course you’re crazy,” I jokingly shoved Issy. He didn’t seem to mind.
“No, the master’s name should go on here,” Jessie backed away from the screen, he wasn’t smiling now, “I’m not Issy’s master… Am I? No… I’m not his master…”
The screen flickered, but nothing really changed except the time, “it needs to be someone I trust and I mean really trust. Someone like…”
The screen flickered on last time to the original recording of Jessie, “Take care of me Ash. Goodbye.”
That’s when the DVD stopped. It went back to the main menu. I clicked the remote a few times to get it back to the end. But the end really was the end. The DVD just cut off there. In the end, Jessie had chickened out on telling me who had become his master. I figured that he could tell me after he woke up from trance. Or was he getting my opinion about who should take care of him. After all he trusts…
That’s when it hit me, Jessie trusts me. I mean, he trusts me enough to tell me his little secret… Plus the way that he reacted before he went into trance. Jessie had also failed to explain why he was gone. I took a look at Issy. He was sitting in the ready for something. Issy sure was being obedient to me. Now I saw that his dog tags were both engraved. I knew what the first one said, but I wasn’t sure that I wanted to read the other one.
Still, I had to be certain. I reached out for the tags. Issy didn’t seem to mind at all. He even seem to encourage it. The first tag read exactly what my brother had shown me on the tape. In big bold letters was the name “Issy”. Feeling the tags I felt that there was a third one too, but I was only interested in the second one for now. I slid it slowly at first, but decided to just get it over with. In not so bold letters were the words:
“Legal Guardian,” I asked out loud. I flipped that tag over to see that my contact information was on it. Even my Email that I had changed just last week. Jessie had kept these tags updated. He trusted me even before he told me about this. I was thankful that he didn’t put ‘Ashley’, but why did he list me as his ‘legal guardian’. What did the third tag say?
“What is this,” I asked Issy as if he could understand me, “You trusted me enough that you’d tell me about this, but you don’t want me to be your master?”
I had to admit, I was a little disappointed. Relieved, but disappointed. Okay, so it hurt a little, but the DVD did have a “Questions&Answers” section on it. I decided to skip the Instructions and take a look at that one next. The lists of questions were mostly about how to take care of Issy, or what kind of tricks he could do. The first question on the list though was, “Why me?” I figured that’s what he wanted me to see.
“Okay, so ‘why me?’ or rather ‘why you Ash’,” Jessie bit his lip again, “frankly, I trust you Ash. I trust you completely with protecting me, but I know you can’t protect me forever. Like I said in the Instructions, you wouldn’t leave me in the hands of someone who would abuse me. And Issy is me so… please find someone nice for Issy. I know that you can do it, Ash.”
“So you do want me to find someone for you,” I pet Issy before I realized what I was doing, “but why are you asking me for this in a recording?”
Issy looked back up at me. He seemed sad now. He snuggled up close, wanting to be pet again. He certainly wasn’t going to tell me anything except, “pet me some more” (if he could, that is). I guessed now that I should be watching these sections in order. I clicked back to the main menu and selected Instructions. The same introduction of setting up the camera occurred before Jessie started.
“Okay, Knowing you Ash, you must have skipped this section entirely. It must have been at least a whole day before you realized that I’m just not waking up,” Jessie laughed pointing to a certain book he owned, “If I’m wrong, then I kind of bet a couple hundred you would. You know where the bills would be hidden.”
He slipped the book back on the shelf and returned to his single seat.
“In this video, I guess you think that I’m going to instruct you on how to get me back and how to put Issy away,” Jessie shook his head, “Sorry to disappoint you, but no. I’m never coming out of trance again.”
“What!?!”
“Sure, you can try to look at the sessions that I used, but the wake up phrase is gone. Totally deleted. I told Issy to forget it from his memory. So even if you find the phrase that I used before, it will not work now. The last session that I used got rid of it. I’m really gone.”
My brother’s eyes began watering on the screen, he wiped a tear away, and stared at it for a moment. After that he let out a single chuckle.
“You know, I hadn’t thought about it until now, but this is sort of like dying isn’t it?” I’m dead and I’m not coming back,” Jess slowly shook his head, “Still, I really am happier like this, but we both know that Issy would never be accepted in normal society either. I know that you wont let them take Issy away to the nut house or something.”
“And yet you still did this?”
“It wouldn’t be fair to Issy. He deserves to live too. I can’t take care of him considering that I’ll be ‘out of it’ as long as Issy’s out,” Jessie puffed, “That’s what I’m most afraid of for Issy right now. Issy can’t live in this world without people judging him. Issy wont be able to defend himself. I know for a fact that he can work just like any human can, so you wont have to worry about working to pay for his living expenses. Heck, you can keep him as free labor if that’s what you want.”
“I’m not going to do something like that,” I shook my head, “you’re still in there somewhere.”
“I know you wont do something like that Ash,” Jess answered me, “But I am saying you can if times get tough. Just let Issy be himself every now and then, if it does come down to that. Now if you need Issy to follow some very specific instructions all you have to do is put your hand on his head. When you do, he’ll listen very carefully to you and only you. Even then there’s some instructions that he wont be able to follow.”
“Like turning you back to normal.”
“Exactly… Even if you get Issy to act like me, the effects would only be temporary,” Jess looked away, “So, yes… I really am going to be gone. But the big question of the day is why aren’t you the master and yet Issy will obey you. I’m certain that you’ve noticed by now that your name isn’t on the master’s tag. I’d like to say that it’s because God is my real master, but that’s not the reason. I did it because I know that you can’t take care of me forever. I need you to help Issy…
Jess trailed off a bit as he bit his lip, “I need you to find Issy a master. Someone who’s willing to be with him and protect him. A mate, if you will. Kind of weird to say it like that, isn’t it? A mate… I know it does, but Issy will be completely devoted to her so long as you’re the one that tells him that it’s her.”
“You can’t expect me to do this.”
“I never wanted to cause you any trouble, but all I’m really doing is accelerating what’s already happening to me,” Jess put a hand to his head, “I have no choice though. I’ve tried to stop, but I just couldn’t get rid of Issy. It’s just… too late for me. I’ve gone under so many times that I’m having trouble living in the real world anymore.”
“Why didn’t you come to us for help?”
“I’m not going to die in some padded room. If I’m going to go, then I’d rather be happy than deteriorating on the psych’s chair,” Jess continued, I forgot that this was a recording, “I relied too much on Issy and now I’m paying the price for it. Please don’t let Issy be alone for the rest of his life. That’s what got me into this situation to begin with and it’s not going to help him get out of it.”
“I can’t believe this…”
“Now, enough living in the past. How about you try Issy out,” Jessie suggested, “Pause the video and try placing your hand on his head. Tell Issy to do anything. Anything at all. He’ll do it without question. Well, almost anything. Remember, hypnosis can’t make you do what you don’t want to do and he just wants to please people. Don’t break his trust. He still has freewill in him, but you get the idea… Have fun.”
Jessie paused for a few seconds to give me time to grab the remote and click pause. I took the opportunity. I needed time to think about this. Jessie really wasn’t giving me any real choice about this. I placed my hand on his head. Issy looked up at me instantly.
“Can you really understand me like this?”
“Ruff,” Issy’s eyes brightened.
“Speak,” I ordered him.
Issy responded with a single bark
“I said speak.”
Issy barked immediately again.
“Why wont you speak t-”
Issy barked, once more wagging that imaginary tail of his as if he was playing with me. That’s when I realized my mistake. It was a common dog trick for a dog to bark when his master tells him to ‘speak’. I shouldn’t say, ‘speak’. I’d have to choose my words a little more carefully.
“Tell me something in English.”
Issy responded by opening his mouth and squeaking. He repeated this action. It was like the words that he’d know as Jessie were restricted from his brain. He knew the words, but he’d have to force them out. Still he wanted to please me as his temporary master. He tried a few more times before giving up. He tried his hardest, but simply couldn’t. I knew he did by how he whined. Clearly talking was impossible for him. I decided to pet him behind the ear assuringly.
“It’s okay,” I said, Issy understood, “can you learn if I asked you to?”
“Ruff ruff,” Issy wagged happily, so eager to please. Even if I didn’t know what he wanted to say to me, I could tell that he meant to say that he’d try.
“Okay,” I nodded, “can you walk like a human being?”
Issy didn’t answer, instead he demonstrated for me. Issy stood up straight, but he also still wagged his invisible tail. He wanted praise, but I didn’t feel like giving it to him just yet. I stood up and placed my hand again.
“Jessie said that you could work like a normal human,” I looked him in the eyes, “can you show me what he meant by that first?”
Issy nodded and turned to the kitchen. Issy didn’t waste any time to get started cooking something. He didn’t show a single signal for what he was making. It was as if he was in the zone for it. Don’t get the wrong idea. His College Major was in Economics. The best thing that I’ve ever seen Jessie cook was eggs and microwave pizza. What Issy was making was much more complicated than that.
“What are you making,” I asked him. Issy didn’t seem to hear me. It wasn’t hard to figure out what I needed to do. I placed my hand down again, “From now on, when I speak to you, you’ll be able to understand me, hand or no hand. Now can show me what you are making?”
Issy took the time to pull out a cook book from over his sink. He flipped through the pages and pointed to the picture. Strawberry angel food cake. It was one of my favorites. I watched as he followed the recipe down to the dot. Issy didn’t need to reference the book even once. Issy was cooking straight from memory. After placing the batter in the oven, he cleaned the kitchen counters spotless. Short of the sliced strawberries and the cake in the oven, you wouldn’t be able to tell that anyone had been baking at all.
“I’m impressed,” I smiled at Issy. Issy barked and panted happily again.
“Well, we’ve got a few minutes for that to bake,” I picked up the remote and pressed play.
“Having fun yet,” Jessie smiled, “I’m sure you didn’t make Jessie do anything big yet. Tell him to make you something. I’ve got a nice surprise for you prepared and he’s been itching to make it for you.”
Jessie paused again. Clearly expecting me to pause the video. I didn’t, of course. Jessie continued, “Is it good? Call it a peace offering if you like. I told you that Issy could work like a human if he needed to. He can also wash, vacuum, dust and type. Basically taking care of the house if you tell him to.”
Jessie leaned in closer to the screen, “And he wouldn’t mind wearing a maid’s outfit if you want to embarrass me in front of your friends.”
“It wouldn’t be the same,” I told him, not really caring if it was just a recording.
“Also, I know that you can’t always give him commands from a distance, so-,” Jess sat back. “I conditioned Issy to obey, if he hears your voice on speakers like in a prerecorded message or on the phone. I’ll leave the rest for you to figure out, because I haven’t been able to test every scenario yet.”
“Again, I’m sorry for thrusting this responsibility on you, Ash. I picked you because there is no one that I trust more in the world. I leave Issy in your capable hands,” Jessie’s smile disappeared again, he was making those eyes, “Issy will protect you like I never could. In a way, this is my way of protecting you too. Then if you find Issy a mate, he will protect her. Teach Issy to be the best human that he can be, but teach him to be the best husband that he can be first.”
“Jess,” I shouted. He was beating himself up over a specific incident that had occurred in our past. Again, I don’t want to talk about it. It’s none of your business.
“As for mom,” Jess shook his head, smiling, “I’m sorry, you’re really on your own with that one this time.”
“You coward.”
“What do you expect me to say to her,” Jess joked a bit, “You know how she is. I don’t suppose we could fake an accident or something. Then delay Issy from talking to her with a false case of Laryngitis. You’re smart. I’m sure you’ll figure something out.”
The timer buzzed in the kitchen. I hit pause again, because the cake was done. I hadn’t noticed, but Issy was sitting staring in the oven the entire time. The moment the buzzer went off, Issy was ready to take out the cake. He flipped the pan over and let the cake fall onto a cutting board. He followed up by burying it under the previously prepared strawberries. He had a single glass of milk ready for me when I wasn’t looking.
“Aren’t you having some?”
Issy shook his head ‘no’. He sliced a single piece for me and plopped it into a bowl. He turned to place his creation in front of me. Then stared at me. Paused before retrieving a spoon. Then stared at me again. No. He was waiting for me…
“Um… thank you,” I said to him, but Issy didn’t respond. I poured the milk onto the cake just like I always do, but not nearly the same way. The fact that my brother was staring at me made eating my favorite dessert, shall we say, hard to swallow. I don’t remember the taste. It wasn’t for three more bites before I decided that I had to break the ice, “it’s really good, Issy.”
Now he responded in all his undignified glory. Issy wagged that butt of his smiling as if he had just gotten away with murder. Which in a way, he sort of did.
“But don’t think that I’m not still mad at you, Jessie,” I shouted, Issy backed up, which only helped to confirm to me that at least a little bit of my brother was still in there, “now have some cake, Issy. No sense making it if you don’t get to eat it too.”
Issy lightened up a bit and got himself a bowl of the cake. He sat and stared at it for a few seconds before getting out a glass of milk and mimicked my little habit. Issy finished by leaning on the counter by his forearms. He smiled at me again as if he was asking for permission or something.
“I don’t have to tell you when to eat, do I?”
Issy responded, ‘no’, before devouring the cake. The next two seconds made me, lose my appetite. Oh, did I forget to mention that Issy didn’t use a spoon? Or his hands for that matter? He just plopped his nose right down in there and literally devoured the cake and strawberries. I was surprised that he didn’t spill any more than he did.
After the cake he just started licking the bowl clean. He didn’t bother cleaning up the mess on the counter with his tongue either. When his bowl was licked clean, he smiled up at me again wagging his tail. I couldn’t tell if he was messing with me or if he was telling me that he enjoyed his meal.
Having a dog for a brother was going to be harder than I thought…
TrickyChimera). This is the first story that I've worked on and published without Cobalt Raccoon's help. I mean sure he proofread it, but that's it. It's not very "Furry" persay, but I've seen stories that are similar to this one here. One example was written by
Jagrrr and a link is available in the warning. There's also some mentioning of coming out of the closet. If you don't like it, then (with all due respect) get over it. If you're insulted, know that this is a work of fiction made to be enjoyed by a small audience. If you're insulted, I honestly don't see how.Issy the Dog
My name is Ashley Delton. No, I’m a guy. And yes, it’s a girl’s name, so you’d think that I was a girl. I get that a lot. It’s not my fault that our dad had a sick sense of humor. He had two boys and he gave us both girl names. It certainly doesn’t help either one of us be any more open with ourselves. But more about that later. My big brother’s name is (or rather was) Jessie. He doesn’t really go by that name anymore. This is his story…
Perhaps I should start at the beginning, but I’m not even sure when the beginning was. My story is the first, but that’s only because my big brother is now dead. Though dead is a bit of a strong word. That’s to say that he doesn’t exist anymore. Jessie had left behind only one record of what he had done and why he had done it. However, that record is part of my story. No, this is still his story, just my viewpoint of it.
It may have started at that dinner. It may have been before then, but that’s when I would like to start. My brother and I were having our monthly ritual of eating at Imperial Noodles. I live about four hours away for college and so I don’t get to eat with him very often. Being only two years apart, we were close. Very close. We’d shared everything with each other. Up to that point it was, almost everything. That day, I decided to tell him something that I haven’t told many people before. I hadn’t told most people because of my major studies.
“Jess, I’m gay.”
“Ooh-kay…,” Jessie stopped eating for a moment. He didn’t seem to be that phased by it.
“I’m serious.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Jess sighed and took a sip from his coke. God knows what he was thinking, “What about Mallory? Does she know?”
Mallory was my girlfriend for the past six years. We’ve had a long distance relationship going for three, but we were serious about marriage. We still are.
“I told her, but you know how she is.”
“I guess so,” he laughed, but kept on eating his beef fried rice.
“Don’t you care?”
“Hey man,” Jess raised his hands, “it’s your choice, not mine.”
We kept eating and laughing about what had been occurring between my brother and myself over the years. Specifically, we spoke about Mallory and the stories involving her. But if I told you even one of those stories, then I’d have to kill you, if you know what I mean. We joked a little longer, when Jess asked me specifically, “Do you plan on telling mom?”
“I’ve tried, but she thought that I was kidding.”
“Sounds like mom,” he laughed, “remember when I told her that I got suspended?”
“Yeah, she didn’t believe it for a second,” I remembered, “the next day she was telling you that you were going to be late if you didn’t get up.”
“Yeah, good old mom,” Jess paused, “Are you going to try again?”
“I don’t know,” I quietly finished my plate, “You don’t think that she’d… I don’t know… freak?”
“Ash, she loves you, no matter what interests you have,” Jess reached out for my hand, “you know that, right?”
“I guess so…”
“Don’t get me wrong, she’s not going to support it,” he laughed to himself again, “but she still loves you.”
“That’s cold.”
“You know what I meant.”
“Of course,” I knew, “I’m not going to give up on God just because of something like this.”
Yes, I’m a Christian and I’m gay. So sue me. I know how most people out there view Christians and Gay Christians, but this story is not about me or my faith, it’s about my brother.
“I’m going to try telling her again,” I nodded to myself, “will you be there with me when I do?”
“Of course,” Jess said, gulping to himself, “if you promise to come to my house afterwords.”
“What for?”
“I kind of want you to meet someone,” Jess took another drink from his coke.
“Girlfriend?”
“No, nothing like that,” Jessie waved his hands in the air, “it’s something else.”
“Why not before I tell mom?”
“You’ll see,” Jessie bit his lip and left it at that. I had forgotten about it completely. He never once mentioned it again. That was typical of my brother. He’d tell you once and expect you to remember it forever.
~~~~~~~
“Thanks for being there for me,” I patted Jessie on the back as we walked up to his apartment. It was about eight or nine months later. That night, I had told mom about my “feelings”. We established some very personal things about what happened. That’s the only reason that I will not reveal any details about that. All I will say is that it had gone smoothly and as Jessie had assured me that it would. It was now late into the night and Jessie had driven us home. He was nervous about something, but I was too focused on myself to notice.
“Anytime Ash,” Jessie smiled weakly, before he dashed up the stairs, “come on.”
“Wait up,” I followed him, but I wasn’t nearly as athletic as him. He could run on all fours if he wanted to. I’ve said that before and I meant it as a joke. He waited for me at the top of the stairs. His leg was bouncing as if he really needed to take a piss, so I didn’t think otherwise. He went to the door the moment that I had reached the last flight of stairs. He unlocked it quickly and looked back at me.
“You ready?”
“Ready for what?”
“You remember,” Jess twirled his hand at me, “You promised me that you’d meet someone.”
“Oh right,” I marked quotations in the air, “your friend.”
“Hey, I didn’t judge you. I supported you,” Jessie turned to go inside, “So please support me with this.”
I followed him inside shortly after. I didn’t see another living soul in his apartment. I looked, but all I saw was Jessie kicking off his shoes before gathering up some things. His laptop was the first thing that he went to get. The other thing that he had gotten was a custom made DVD. He put the DVD on his coffee table. He kept his laptop under his arm as he gave me a hug.
“So where’s your friend?”
“He’s already here,” Jess said, not letting go of me, “I just need to go wake him up.”
“Okay,” I hugged him back for a second or two, and then a minute longer, “seriously this is kind of awkward for me.”
“Sorry,” Jess stepped back, nearly dropping his laptop, “I’m just not sure if you’ll like me after you meet him.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“You’ll see,” Jess forced himself to breath, “wait for like five minutes and if I’m not back yet then just put in the DVD.”
“Why,” I tried to ask him.
“Just trust me,” he slipped into the back room.
Well, I did as Jessie asked of me. If I hadn’t listened, then maybe things would have turned out differently. I don’t know. Maybe then, I’d still have my big brother. I sat there for ten minutes, then ten more. I had no clue as to what my brother was doing in the other room. I figured that I had waited long enough and popped the disk in the player.
The menu was a little weird. The Title Menu listed “Good-bye”, “Instructions” and “Questions&Answers”. “Good-bye” was first so I figured that I should play it first. The screen flickered for a moment. The next thing that I saw was my brother. He was setting up a camera in front of a chair. He sat himself down and huffed for a moment.
“Hey Ash,” Jessie smiled, “if you’re watching this then congrads on telling mom. Knowing me, I must have already told you that, like sixty times by now. Next, I want to say that I’m so sorry about what I’m about to… or rather… what I’ve already done.”
“Done what,” I thought out loud.
“Of course, what am I saying,” Jessie laughed, “you wouldn’t know it yet, but I’m gone.”
My eyes widened.
“No, I’m not dead! Please, sit back down,” Jessie yelled, knowing me far too well, I sat back down as he continued, “I’m not dead, but I am gone. I’ve already made a list of questions that I know that you would have and have already tried to answer them as best as I can. I’m putting them in this DVD.”
‘This has to be some kind of joke’, I thought to myself.
Jess on the screen paused a moment to massage his eyes. He sighed another moment and continued, “No, this is not a joke. If I haven’t told you already, my friend is in the other room. What I haven’t told you is who my friend is. See, a while ago, I kind of got into hypnosis. The sessions helped me to relax and relieve myself of the stress of every day life. I really enjoyed them. It just felt so good to just sit back and not think for a while. You know? One day, I decided to try a different kind of hypnosis. You know, one of those transformation sessions?”
“What does this have to do with-”
“Be patient, I’m getting to the point,” the Jessie on the screen answered as if he was listening to me, “And yes, I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out. One day, I tried it. A dog transformation video. Oh god…”
The screen flickered and showed Jessie setting up the camera again. He was wearing different clothes this time. Some time must have passed between the two recordings. Jessie put his head in his hands as if he was remembering something embarrassing.
“How did I feel? I felt… I feel so free as a dog. I didn’t have any control over myself, but I didn’t care. I was a dog…,” this Jessie smiled to himself, “Dog’s don’t have a sense of responsibility. I want to try again, but I’ve got class in-”
The screen suddenly flipped back to the first recording. Jessie was nodding to himself this time. That smile he had in the last scene was gone. Frankly, I could tell that he was drained between these tapes.
“The burden was always gone as long as I was a dog. So I edited my own sessions, to give my dog self instructions. I don’t know why I did. I just wanted to experiment a bit I guess. With that, the stress of college was gone. I had myself study while I was in trance and then I wouldn’t stress about the tests later. Next, I used trance to get one or two chores done. Then I started going into trance for pretty much anything around the house.”
Jessie paused as if he was thinking that I’d say something about now, but changed his mind, “I’m telling you all this because, I’m losing it. I can’t live my own life anymore, Ash. I need Issy to do anything right. I just can’t get rid of Issy.”
“Issy,” I asked but Jessie continued ranting.
“I’m forgetting things that I shouldn’t forget. I’m not getting out as often as I should. Hell, most days I have off, I’m spending it eating, sleeping, and playing with dog toys that I keep hidden in my room. Even when I’m not in trance. I like being a dog, Ash, but it’s lonely. That’s why, I’m doing this.”
Jessie paused again as if he was expecting me to answer him. I didn’t even know what to think of what he was telling me.
“I’m serious Ash,” Jessie assured me as if he knew my answer, “Issy, come here.”
That’s when I heard light thumps and a jingling coming from the other room. Jessie came out of the back room, walking on all fours, and dressed in some shorts and a skin tight tee-shirt. He had a lite blue dog collar on his neck, I didn’t have time to pay it mind. His tongue was hanging limply from his mouth as he panted. I didn’t panic at first, because frankly, I figured it was all some kind of elaborate prank. Jessie didn’t seem to think that I would think so.
“Please don’t freak out,” I heard the TV shout at me, “This is the friend that I was talking about. My dog self, Issy. Say hello Issy…”
“Ra rooh,” Jessie howled with his butt wagging as if he had a tail. He smiled stupidly and stared at me as if he was waiting for something. I was still recovering from the shock of seeing my older brother act this way. Even for him, this was pretty drastic for a joke.
“Okay, joke’s over,” I said to Jess, “I didn’t believe it for a second.”
“He doesn’t understand how to speak, but I taught him to recognize certain words so that he will know what you want from him,” the Jess on screen continued. The Jess on the floor kept wagging his invisible tail, “Like now, when he’s being good all you really have to do is say, ‘Good boy’.”
At that command, real Jess’s smile got even wider and his eyes rolled into the back of his head. He tilted a little bit and stomped his foot down rapidly. He looked so stupid, but I sat back and let my brother continue to make a fool of himself. The Jessie on the screen tilted his head in the same direction as he shivered a bit, before he continued.
“It gives me… Issy,” Jess looked up at the screen, “great pleasure. Saying those words is like rubbing him behind the ear. He really likes being rubbed there. He also hates loud noises so please don’t yell at him too much either. I know because I recorded myself plenty of-”
“Come on Jessie,” I paused the DVD, “Do you really expect me to fall for this?”
Jessie didn’t answer me. He just stared at me and tilted his head. He was very good at this. He must have had months of practice. I had to catch him off guard if I was going to make him slip.
“Well, since you are a dog then you wouldn’t mind if I…,” I stood up to retrieve something that I knew was precious to my brother, “If I go and break your favorite mug.”
I found Jess’s “Filler Up!” mug sitting in his cabinet and lifted it up for him to see it. Jess gave me no reaction. He just sat there… as if he was just expecting me to do it. No, daring me to do it. Or that’s how I felt seeing him smiling and panting at me like he did. I had to do it. I tossed the mug in the air. I caught it in time. Still no reaction. He didn’t even flinch. He really wasn’t going to give me the satisfaction that he didn’t trick me.
“I’m serious,” I warned him, “I’ll do it.”
That’s when Jess stretched himself and yawned. Jessie smacked his lips a few times. He acted as if he was bored with me, hopped up onto the couch and laid down. That was the last straw. Something in me just snapped.
“Quit it Jess,” I hurled the mug at him.
For a split second, I thought that Jessie would, well at least try to catch the mug. He didn’t. He instead tried to keep from getting hit. He failed at I hit him square on the head. He stared at the fragmented mug, then looked straight at me. I knew that look. I’d seen it a thousand times when our father… Look, just trust me about this. It’s his story. Jessie looked at me like I was punishing him for something that he didn’t do. Even if he didn’t I was already convinced.
“Jess,” I asked slowly, “this really isn’t a joke, is it?”
Jessie didn’t answer me, he kept looking at me with those eyes. I swore that I’d never see him make those eyes again. That’s why I had… No, I wont get off subject. This is Jessie’s story. Still… I didn’t like that look. It made me remember some very dark times. The DVD said that Jessie, no Issy only understood a few key words. Still I had to tell Jess that I didn’t mean to… mean to…
I remember crying. Not much, I’m not a cry baby like when I was a kid. I just hoped that Jessie wouldn’t remember what I had done to Issy while he was under. Maybe forgive me for hurting him like that.
“Issy,” I had to play along, Issy looked to the ground, “look at me. Come here.”
Issy very tenderly stepped down from the couch. He still felt like he was in trouble, but he was obedient. He stopped a few feet away from me. Still I motioned for him to come closer. He obeyed without any real hesitation. I checked for damage while I could assuring him that I wasn’t going to hurt him again. Luckily, his skin wasn’t broken. Maybe a bit bruised, but he’s physically alright. Mom always said that we were hard headed.
“Issy, I’m sorry. You’re not in trouble,” I said as I pat my brother on the head. Issy seemed to understand exactly what I was telling him and became instantly slap happy again. He was about to lick me if I hadn’t stopped him. I figured that I might as well reward him, as strange as all this was, “good boy.”
Issy did that thing again. He was enjoying the attention he was getting from those imaginary hands. It was still very creepy for me to see my own brother like that. I took the time to pick up the pieces of his mug and hide the evidence. I had to tell Issy to stay only once and he stayed until I told him other wise. Whatever trance that my brother was under was extremely deep. When I returned to the couch, Issy hopped up next to me. He placed his head on the rest, ready for a nap. I figured that I might as well finish the DVD and let him sleep it off. Surely, he’d wake up as Jessie, right?
“-plenty of times,” Jessie continued, “I don’t know why our personalities are so different. I can only assume that Issy is the more innocent side of myself… A side that I didn’t get to be… growing up… I just kept it bottled up and Issy was born from it.”
Issy perked up when he heard his name. He was waiting for his master to give him a command, but Jessie continued on with his monologue.
“But I can get to that later with the questions section of the disk,” Jessie bit his lip, “the other commands are just the basics of dog training. Sit, lie down, roll over, play dead, but there are some commands that you just can’t teach a dog that I’ve taught Issy. You’ll learn about those in the instructions section though…”
Jess seemed to be scared about something. I could tell. He was avoiding what he wanted to tell me. The tape flickered again. This time Jessie was setting up the camera. I knew this day. Jessie had just gotten a bad hair cut that day. That was over a year ago. His clothes weren’t any different than the ones that Issy was wearing now.
“I got myself some tags today,” Jessie smiled, “the instructions on the video said that I would go deeper if I only I heard the jingle of these dog tags. See I picked the name Issy, because I remember the instructions telling me to pick the first name that came to my mind. Hehehe, but my mind was already blank… so the only words that came to my mind was ’my name is’. That’s it. Over and over again, All I could think was, ‘my name is’. I remember that it was my mantra to go deeper. So I decided to have it engraved right here.”
Jessie picked himself up and came closer to the screen, so that I could read the tags. Clipped to the end of the link was a pair of round tags. The first one read, “Issy”. The other one was left blank.
“See, I figured, why not? That way if I go in public with this trance thing people will be going ‘Issy serious?’ and ‘Issy real?’ Funny right,” Jessie flipped the tag over, “and on the back, I’ve even added a date for my rabies shots.”
Jessie laughed at himself again, but paused. He tapped on the other tag, “this tag however. I’m not sure what to put on here. Should I put my real name here. You know, in case I should escape the house and people think that I’m crazy?”
“Of course you’re crazy,” I jokingly shoved Issy. He didn’t seem to mind.
“No, the master’s name should go on here,” Jessie backed away from the screen, he wasn’t smiling now, “I’m not Issy’s master… Am I? No… I’m not his master…”
The screen flickered, but nothing really changed except the time, “it needs to be someone I trust and I mean really trust. Someone like…”
The screen flickered on last time to the original recording of Jessie, “Take care of me Ash. Goodbye.”
That’s when the DVD stopped. It went back to the main menu. I clicked the remote a few times to get it back to the end. But the end really was the end. The DVD just cut off there. In the end, Jessie had chickened out on telling me who had become his master. I figured that he could tell me after he woke up from trance. Or was he getting my opinion about who should take care of him. After all he trusts…
That’s when it hit me, Jessie trusts me. I mean, he trusts me enough to tell me his little secret… Plus the way that he reacted before he went into trance. Jessie had also failed to explain why he was gone. I took a look at Issy. He was sitting in the ready for something. Issy sure was being obedient to me. Now I saw that his dog tags were both engraved. I knew what the first one said, but I wasn’t sure that I wanted to read the other one.
Still, I had to be certain. I reached out for the tags. Issy didn’t seem to mind at all. He even seem to encourage it. The first tag read exactly what my brother had shown me on the tape. In big bold letters was the name “Issy”. Feeling the tags I felt that there was a third one too, but I was only interested in the second one for now. I slid it slowly at first, but decided to just get it over with. In not so bold letters were the words:
“If found please call:
Ash Delton:
Legal Guardian”“Legal Guardian,” I asked out loud. I flipped that tag over to see that my contact information was on it. Even my Email that I had changed just last week. Jessie had kept these tags updated. He trusted me even before he told me about this. I was thankful that he didn’t put ‘Ashley’, but why did he list me as his ‘legal guardian’. What did the third tag say?
“__________
Master’s Tag”“What is this,” I asked Issy as if he could understand me, “You trusted me enough that you’d tell me about this, but you don’t want me to be your master?”
I had to admit, I was a little disappointed. Relieved, but disappointed. Okay, so it hurt a little, but the DVD did have a “Questions&Answers” section on it. I decided to skip the Instructions and take a look at that one next. The lists of questions were mostly about how to take care of Issy, or what kind of tricks he could do. The first question on the list though was, “Why me?” I figured that’s what he wanted me to see.
“Okay, so ‘why me?’ or rather ‘why you Ash’,” Jessie bit his lip again, “frankly, I trust you Ash. I trust you completely with protecting me, but I know you can’t protect me forever. Like I said in the Instructions, you wouldn’t leave me in the hands of someone who would abuse me. And Issy is me so… please find someone nice for Issy. I know that you can do it, Ash.”
“So you do want me to find someone for you,” I pet Issy before I realized what I was doing, “but why are you asking me for this in a recording?”
Issy looked back up at me. He seemed sad now. He snuggled up close, wanting to be pet again. He certainly wasn’t going to tell me anything except, “pet me some more” (if he could, that is). I guessed now that I should be watching these sections in order. I clicked back to the main menu and selected Instructions. The same introduction of setting up the camera occurred before Jessie started.
“Okay, Knowing you Ash, you must have skipped this section entirely. It must have been at least a whole day before you realized that I’m just not waking up,” Jessie laughed pointing to a certain book he owned, “If I’m wrong, then I kind of bet a couple hundred you would. You know where the bills would be hidden.”
He slipped the book back on the shelf and returned to his single seat.
“In this video, I guess you think that I’m going to instruct you on how to get me back and how to put Issy away,” Jessie shook his head, “Sorry to disappoint you, but no. I’m never coming out of trance again.”
“What!?!”
“Sure, you can try to look at the sessions that I used, but the wake up phrase is gone. Totally deleted. I told Issy to forget it from his memory. So even if you find the phrase that I used before, it will not work now. The last session that I used got rid of it. I’m really gone.”
My brother’s eyes began watering on the screen, he wiped a tear away, and stared at it for a moment. After that he let out a single chuckle.
“You know, I hadn’t thought about it until now, but this is sort of like dying isn’t it?” I’m dead and I’m not coming back,” Jess slowly shook his head, “Still, I really am happier like this, but we both know that Issy would never be accepted in normal society either. I know that you wont let them take Issy away to the nut house or something.”
“And yet you still did this?”
“It wouldn’t be fair to Issy. He deserves to live too. I can’t take care of him considering that I’ll be ‘out of it’ as long as Issy’s out,” Jessie puffed, “That’s what I’m most afraid of for Issy right now. Issy can’t live in this world without people judging him. Issy wont be able to defend himself. I know for a fact that he can work just like any human can, so you wont have to worry about working to pay for his living expenses. Heck, you can keep him as free labor if that’s what you want.”
“I’m not going to do something like that,” I shook my head, “you’re still in there somewhere.”
“I know you wont do something like that Ash,” Jess answered me, “But I am saying you can if times get tough. Just let Issy be himself every now and then, if it does come down to that. Now if you need Issy to follow some very specific instructions all you have to do is put your hand on his head. When you do, he’ll listen very carefully to you and only you. Even then there’s some instructions that he wont be able to follow.”
“Like turning you back to normal.”
“Exactly… Even if you get Issy to act like me, the effects would only be temporary,” Jess looked away, “So, yes… I really am going to be gone. But the big question of the day is why aren’t you the master and yet Issy will obey you. I’m certain that you’ve noticed by now that your name isn’t on the master’s tag. I’d like to say that it’s because God is my real master, but that’s not the reason. I did it because I know that you can’t take care of me forever. I need you to help Issy…
Jess trailed off a bit as he bit his lip, “I need you to find Issy a master. Someone who’s willing to be with him and protect him. A mate, if you will. Kind of weird to say it like that, isn’t it? A mate… I know it does, but Issy will be completely devoted to her so long as you’re the one that tells him that it’s her.”
“You can’t expect me to do this.”
“I never wanted to cause you any trouble, but all I’m really doing is accelerating what’s already happening to me,” Jess put a hand to his head, “I have no choice though. I’ve tried to stop, but I just couldn’t get rid of Issy. It’s just… too late for me. I’ve gone under so many times that I’m having trouble living in the real world anymore.”
“Why didn’t you come to us for help?”
“I’m not going to die in some padded room. If I’m going to go, then I’d rather be happy than deteriorating on the psych’s chair,” Jess continued, I forgot that this was a recording, “I relied too much on Issy and now I’m paying the price for it. Please don’t let Issy be alone for the rest of his life. That’s what got me into this situation to begin with and it’s not going to help him get out of it.”
“I can’t believe this…”
“Now, enough living in the past. How about you try Issy out,” Jessie suggested, “Pause the video and try placing your hand on his head. Tell Issy to do anything. Anything at all. He’ll do it without question. Well, almost anything. Remember, hypnosis can’t make you do what you don’t want to do and he just wants to please people. Don’t break his trust. He still has freewill in him, but you get the idea… Have fun.”
Jessie paused for a few seconds to give me time to grab the remote and click pause. I took the opportunity. I needed time to think about this. Jessie really wasn’t giving me any real choice about this. I placed my hand on his head. Issy looked up at me instantly.
“Can you really understand me like this?”
“Ruff,” Issy’s eyes brightened.
“Speak,” I ordered him.
Issy responded with a single bark
“I said speak.”
Issy barked immediately again.
“Why wont you speak t-”
Issy barked, once more wagging that imaginary tail of his as if he was playing with me. That’s when I realized my mistake. It was a common dog trick for a dog to bark when his master tells him to ‘speak’. I shouldn’t say, ‘speak’. I’d have to choose my words a little more carefully.
“Tell me something in English.”
Issy responded by opening his mouth and squeaking. He repeated this action. It was like the words that he’d know as Jessie were restricted from his brain. He knew the words, but he’d have to force them out. Still he wanted to please me as his temporary master. He tried a few more times before giving up. He tried his hardest, but simply couldn’t. I knew he did by how he whined. Clearly talking was impossible for him. I decided to pet him behind the ear assuringly.
“It’s okay,” I said, Issy understood, “can you learn if I asked you to?”
“Ruff ruff,” Issy wagged happily, so eager to please. Even if I didn’t know what he wanted to say to me, I could tell that he meant to say that he’d try.
“Okay,” I nodded, “can you walk like a human being?”
Issy didn’t answer, instead he demonstrated for me. Issy stood up straight, but he also still wagged his invisible tail. He wanted praise, but I didn’t feel like giving it to him just yet. I stood up and placed my hand again.
“Jessie said that you could work like a normal human,” I looked him in the eyes, “can you show me what he meant by that first?”
Issy nodded and turned to the kitchen. Issy didn’t waste any time to get started cooking something. He didn’t show a single signal for what he was making. It was as if he was in the zone for it. Don’t get the wrong idea. His College Major was in Economics. The best thing that I’ve ever seen Jessie cook was eggs and microwave pizza. What Issy was making was much more complicated than that.
“What are you making,” I asked him. Issy didn’t seem to hear me. It wasn’t hard to figure out what I needed to do. I placed my hand down again, “From now on, when I speak to you, you’ll be able to understand me, hand or no hand. Now can show me what you are making?”
Issy took the time to pull out a cook book from over his sink. He flipped through the pages and pointed to the picture. Strawberry angel food cake. It was one of my favorites. I watched as he followed the recipe down to the dot. Issy didn’t need to reference the book even once. Issy was cooking straight from memory. After placing the batter in the oven, he cleaned the kitchen counters spotless. Short of the sliced strawberries and the cake in the oven, you wouldn’t be able to tell that anyone had been baking at all.
“I’m impressed,” I smiled at Issy. Issy barked and panted happily again.
“Well, we’ve got a few minutes for that to bake,” I picked up the remote and pressed play.
“Having fun yet,” Jessie smiled, “I’m sure you didn’t make Jessie do anything big yet. Tell him to make you something. I’ve got a nice surprise for you prepared and he’s been itching to make it for you.”
Jessie paused again. Clearly expecting me to pause the video. I didn’t, of course. Jessie continued, “Is it good? Call it a peace offering if you like. I told you that Issy could work like a human if he needed to. He can also wash, vacuum, dust and type. Basically taking care of the house if you tell him to.”
Jessie leaned in closer to the screen, “And he wouldn’t mind wearing a maid’s outfit if you want to embarrass me in front of your friends.”
“It wouldn’t be the same,” I told him, not really caring if it was just a recording.
“Also, I know that you can’t always give him commands from a distance, so-,” Jess sat back. “I conditioned Issy to obey, if he hears your voice on speakers like in a prerecorded message or on the phone. I’ll leave the rest for you to figure out, because I haven’t been able to test every scenario yet.”
“Again, I’m sorry for thrusting this responsibility on you, Ash. I picked you because there is no one that I trust more in the world. I leave Issy in your capable hands,” Jessie’s smile disappeared again, he was making those eyes, “Issy will protect you like I never could. In a way, this is my way of protecting you too. Then if you find Issy a mate, he will protect her. Teach Issy to be the best human that he can be, but teach him to be the best husband that he can be first.”
“Jess,” I shouted. He was beating himself up over a specific incident that had occurred in our past. Again, I don’t want to talk about it. It’s none of your business.
“As for mom,” Jess shook his head, smiling, “I’m sorry, you’re really on your own with that one this time.”
“You coward.”
“What do you expect me to say to her,” Jess joked a bit, “You know how she is. I don’t suppose we could fake an accident or something. Then delay Issy from talking to her with a false case of Laryngitis. You’re smart. I’m sure you’ll figure something out.”
The timer buzzed in the kitchen. I hit pause again, because the cake was done. I hadn’t noticed, but Issy was sitting staring in the oven the entire time. The moment the buzzer went off, Issy was ready to take out the cake. He flipped the pan over and let the cake fall onto a cutting board. He followed up by burying it under the previously prepared strawberries. He had a single glass of milk ready for me when I wasn’t looking.
“Aren’t you having some?”
Issy shook his head ‘no’. He sliced a single piece for me and plopped it into a bowl. He turned to place his creation in front of me. Then stared at me. Paused before retrieving a spoon. Then stared at me again. No. He was waiting for me…
“Um… thank you,” I said to him, but Issy didn’t respond. I poured the milk onto the cake just like I always do, but not nearly the same way. The fact that my brother was staring at me made eating my favorite dessert, shall we say, hard to swallow. I don’t remember the taste. It wasn’t for three more bites before I decided that I had to break the ice, “it’s really good, Issy.”
Now he responded in all his undignified glory. Issy wagged that butt of his smiling as if he had just gotten away with murder. Which in a way, he sort of did.
“But don’t think that I’m not still mad at you, Jessie,” I shouted, Issy backed up, which only helped to confirm to me that at least a little bit of my brother was still in there, “now have some cake, Issy. No sense making it if you don’t get to eat it too.”
Issy lightened up a bit and got himself a bowl of the cake. He sat and stared at it for a few seconds before getting out a glass of milk and mimicked my little habit. Issy finished by leaning on the counter by his forearms. He smiled at me again as if he was asking for permission or something.
“I don’t have to tell you when to eat, do I?”
Issy responded, ‘no’, before devouring the cake. The next two seconds made me, lose my appetite. Oh, did I forget to mention that Issy didn’t use a spoon? Or his hands for that matter? He just plopped his nose right down in there and literally devoured the cake and strawberries. I was surprised that he didn’t spill any more than he did.
After the cake he just started licking the bowl clean. He didn’t bother cleaning up the mess on the counter with his tongue either. When his bowl was licked clean, he smiled up at me again wagging his tail. I couldn’t tell if he was messing with me or if he was telling me that he enjoyed his meal.
Having a dog for a brother was going to be harder than I thought…
