S'been a while since we've seen anything of the humans in my Universe.
Those of you who even remember I used to draw humans from time to time might notice that their armor has gone through a bit of a change. S'not the only change they've gone through though.
The UESF is now the EUS (Ethnic Union of Sol) and our race as such has become a little more matured from how I used to think about the system of our future.
The conflict with the Orians remain the same though, so that hasn't changed, though the antagonists are pending a design overhaul, hence why I didn't show any of them in this picture.
Just a little something I tossed together as a piece of sci-fi violence to contrast all the- oooh, almost gave that away there, didn't I X3

This is one of those moments you wish you had one of these.

It had to be Capt. Miller. Not even TIGER Armor can stop a 45 Auto.
Now that would be interesting to see, a tiny pistol blowing up something huge.
Antagonist: "Stand back everybody!"
*pulls out derringer*
Audience: "lol, you can't do anything with that"
*shoots and vaporizes battleship*
Audience: "lolwut"

Oh my! It seems that the second soldier was disarmed!
Quick! Someone lend him a hand!
I bet he feels a bit burned right now...
He probably got the point of using cover.
Guess next time he won't be such a hotshot.
He will be more tuned into the stream of battle.
Ok, i will stop now.
(I know he still has both arms attached, but the grey undertones blended with the background, and... i couldn't resist the laser-guided puns.)

So, are humans considered less advanced than your other species, iPoke? That one guy is just using a standard ballistic handgun from the looks of it, while the enemy is using laser- or plasma-based weaponry. That, and the armor looks like it's standard plating rather than a powered suit like Antar's.
You could say that, though it's not a matter of consideration, it's just simple fact that our technology isn't quite as advanced as that of others. The Sol (that is, we humans) have only recently joined the Galactic community of space faring species and even so, interaction with other species is tentative, since we had the unfortunate luck of having first contact with omnicidal conservationists.
We use advanced ballistic weaponry and semi-powered armor, that is, we have electronic capabilities in the suits and they carry themselves mostly, so you have a little more mobility, but that's about it.

We call ourselves humans, but everybody else calls us Sol, since that's our originating star. In Galactic Standard Language (GalStandard) all species are referred to by the name of their originating star in their native language.
As for acceptance into the community; there is no such thing as a massive politically established community between the species, it's more of a general recognition of existence. Most species have a centralized government for themselves, but there's no council or caste that holds a hand over political matters between any special members or parties. So yes, we are recognized as existing as a space faring, sentient species, but apart from that we have no more titles than any other species in the galaxy.

Yeah, we use ballistic weapons still, even if they are more advanced than today. One of the reasons is that they're exceedingly reliable and far cheaper to produce witht he resources we have at hand.
They're not quite as underpowered as they might seem at first though, we're holding up pretty well :3

Am I the only one who thinks the one on the right looks a lot like the space marine in this picture?

I have to say, from what you describe in the pics describing the humans and the Orians in your universe, including conflicts between the races, names of groups formed, and designs of weapons and armor that both races wield, it sounds like you've really been putting much thought into how things work in it. Are you planning to make a story/graphic novel from these ideas someday, by chance? If so, I'd definitely read it. :)
As always, I like how much intricate lineart detail and coloring you put into the designs of weapons and armor. Even the battle damage wounds on the armor (the soldier at the bottom-left corner) looks neat. The lighting effects from the weapons fired (including the laser shot piercing/melting a corner of a wall the soldier on the right is taking cover in) and the explosions are probably what stood out most for me in this pic though.
Is it bad if I'm thinking that this pic is inspired in part from the latest (and last?) Mass Effect game coming out...or rather, the story/plot in the game revolving around Earth's fate thereof? Either way, this is an excellent-looking pic showing action/struggle in a battle between the two races.

Since I know I don#t have the energy necessary to make it a graphic novel of my own, I might write it, but yes, I am planning to sell out on this X3 also yes, I have put a lot of thought into this. A good ten years for the humans, seven on the si'itians and the others.
As always, I'm glad you enjoy my effect work. I rarely have a picture that is only about content or execution, it's always supposed to be a blend, so I'm happy to recieve praise on both ends.
On Mass Effect; no, it's not bad, just not related entirely. Situation is a little different and we're no on earth (luckily. I'm really annoyed with the humano-centric streak Mass Effect has had with ME2 and the upcoming ME3, but hey, can't help it).
=^-^=

This picture is awesome. I love the blast effects on the lasers, and then the melting armor. That has got to hurt though. Owww. And I get a feeling those humans are at a vast technological disadvantage and should probably be praying to whatever god they probably worship at this point heh
these are Orians... or were, they're currently pending a redesign into something more alien, but I wont say much more than that.
Centralizing story and background material without removing future potential of income from it is difficult, but I have been trying to flesh out my Universe a lot more for people to get a more comprehensive look X3

I like the detail that went into the armor and the impacts of the plasma fire. Always been a fan of the detail you put into your work. Something is bothering me in regards to the placement and/or pose of the marine firing around the corner though. His body seems too tilted to support a stable defensive pose. With his shoulder being beyond the line of the pillar, his hips and feet are placed too far away from the corner for his feet to be beneath him. Considering the angle his body is tilted, it seems to me his feet aren't beneath his center of gravity and he must be falling into the line of fire.
In a second he's going to be a lot worse off than his buddy.
In a second he's going to be a lot worse off than his buddy.
And see this is the proper way to gripe about something XD
Honestly, I'll admit to the part about him being unstable. Technically he was meant to be in the motion of turning around the corner/wincing back from it at the incoming fire, but you're right with his positioning. In the end I really just wanted to do some gratuitous sci-fi action again and I've made worse mistakes than this that people never caught a hold on for whatever reason, but it's not like I'll complain X3
With a little luck though, he might make it away fromt he open though. For being a technologcially advanced civilization, Orians rifles are notoriously inaccurate at anything beyond elbow distance, at least as far as firearms are concerned.

First off, I want to say thanks for replying to my comment! And you certainly did a great gob on the "gratuitous sci-fi action!" xD
One thing I might suggest you try out when structuring the poses of your characters, why not act it out? Find a corner and duck behind it firing a squirt gun. Pay attention to where your body is, how it moves. Maybe set up a video camera to get a third person perspective and to pull reference images from.
In the ref sheet I commissioned from lychee, I actually modeled the pose for the back image myself, and it made the image look far more natural and anatomically correct than it would have been. The twist of the torso, the lines of the back, and the placement of the arms. UUUGH, so beautiful. ;//u//; So yeah, just an idea, and who knows, you might have a lot of fun doing it too!
Also, as a side note, that's hilarious to hear about Orian rifle technology. Sounds like a bad case of "storm trooper aim."

I actually frequently get funny looks for doing just that. Truth be told, the original was meant to look different, but what's done is done ^^
Either way, there's several artists who use pictures and 3D models as backdrop or even trace them and I refuse to fall into that category ever, so I'll happily make my mistakes if it means I can claim to draw everything freehanded XD
As for the Orian rifles; they're not really bad at aiming themselves, it's the guns that are bad. Think Original 1947 Kalashnikov.

this reminds me of one of my Airsoft games I had two years ago :D
I was with my friend, he had an AK47, and i had an Bolt action Rifle, (we were the only one's left of our team) and the enemy had like 5-6 guys, everyone of them had M249 and m16... Goddamn the amount of bb's flying towards us :D it was fun to shoot them one by one when they were reloading

This reminds me of the hours friends and myself played RIFT's years ago, Body armor would keep you from being veporized out right. But the bigger weapons would just put a basketball sized hole through your armor.
Had to move up to Powered armor to take heavy fire, Also hunting with a plasma cannon doesnt leave much to eat 8D
Excellent work btw <3

That is true, but then Orians don't kill to eat. Their philosophy is rather twisted from our point of view, but then alien psychology is.. well alien
As for the armor things; I like to remind people that there is no such thing as weapon-proof, there is only weapon-resistant and protective, but there is nothing that you can ever consider proof, unless you move up orders of magnitude X3

Agreed, even a ballistics expert will tell you there is really no such thing as bullet proof, not entirely. Weapons tend to usually have the edge as far as personal body protection go's.
Might stop a pistol and even some rifle rounds but a high caliber sniper rifle will tear it apart.
And the hunting thing was something i did in one of my first games and wasnt still up to speed on how different the levels of damage between say a hunting rifle and a plasma cannon would be, Poor deer.
Was still used to playing games that used conventional weapons like swords and bows and even firearms, Partical beam, Plasma and laser weapons do a few magnitudes more damage.
Not to mention vehicle mounted anti-armor weapon's that would punch through a modern M1A1 Abrams like it was cheeze, But that one thing i love about Sci-Fi and fantasy, virtually anything is possable.
Again excellent work.
Sorry for the tangent 8D

I have to admit, I miss how I used to do artwork like this and I've forgotten what I've changed o.o
As for caseless ammunition; I've considered the idea, haven't really expanded on it yet. Mostly I suppose casings would still prevail for not needing as many chemical additives to shield against cook-off, but who knows

Aye, That much is true. Though Caseless has come along ways since the days of the HK G11 XD. A lot of people including the US Military see it as a potential for weight savings should it come just a bit further to prevent said cook-offs among other potential issues.
Hope that in the future things clear up enough for you to do more action orientated scenes like this. They really show your skill at showing emotion through the artwork!
