As described in the story, it's a rare, strange wolf that lives alone, and Outcast here is definitely an odd one; older than he looks, aged by the stress of living alone in the woods, let alone believing for the longest time he could have no other home again.
He has thus made his living as a hunter and trapper, at first just for his own sustenance, but slowly for sale as he relearned to feel safe among his own kin. In that isolation, he developed a close and strange relation with the spirits of the forest, hearing them almost daily, conversing with them, even if he couldn't strictly see them as the shamans and druids could.
Of course, what he (and those around him) don't realize is there is potentially some amount of schizophrenic delusion at play; some of these sprites may only exist in his own head as a consequence of his own isolation and essentially self-inflicted trauma. Made muddier by the fact such animist spirits are entirely real in this setting; Are the voices of the woods real? Are they simply his imagination and solitude playing with him? No one may truly know.
A strange lad, but we've come to adore him as a figure to focus on when we want a more...ground-level, personal view on the Princedom. Heavily inspired between the initial phrase of "lone wolf" and also watching a LOT of Senua's Sacrifice longplays, aheh...
