this day at work some more troubleshooting was dropped on my lap!
a pair of firewalls were no longer accepting new configuration changes. Looking into their health stats, it was clear something was going on with memory!
Despite being configured with the exact same settings (eg: high availability) one of the firewalls was showing 51% memory consumption, while the other was showing 95% memory consumption...
This generally shouldn't happen and can have something to do with the size of the configurations being run on the device
spent majority of the day trying to find out why this was and hwo exactly the firewall distributes memory consumption among all the different settings it can have

this couple of firewalls were of the smaller more limited variety.
For those you need to be careful how much configuration you push onto them, if you reach their limit they will stop accepting any further changes!
And will start behaving erratically, like thie couple of firewalls did :P
Solution was to essentially get rid of some unnecessary / outdated configs to decrease the size, and they were back in working order :3
gotta keep that config slim ;P
