Here's my best guess: They are in the realm of a Hi no tori. A phoenix.
- They've met Earth, Air, and Water. That leaves Fire.
- The island is home to a very powerful kami. It's glowing with spirit energy.
- Phoenixes straddle the boundaries between life and death, especially in Japanese mythology.
- Every demigod they've met thus far has been corrupted or is plain cuckoobananas. They may as well be Skeksis. A corrupted phoenix would be flat out terrifying. Sucking the spiritual energy - the life force - out of everything in the vicinity is well within their legendary power set.
- Their extremely powerful magical artifact, glowing with spiritual energy, just went dead.
- ... and they just ran straight into a Heartless that's taking them back to her "master."
I could very well be wrong, but even if my guess is incorrect, none of what's happened on this island bodes well. Out of the fishbowl - and straight into the fire.
