I'm only a couple hours south of Flagstaff, which is a dark city so I can view the stars there happily.

Canon T2i. DSLR. Shot using the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens it comes with.

Start off with an entry-level DSLR. Then if you want to get serious, be prepared to invest large amounts of money into good lenses and a proper DSLR.
