Taking photos of the Moon does require those to be available to manipulate. A lot of people think you'd need to run a long exposure, but it's actually the opposite since the Moon is extremely bright. I was running a 1/160th shutter speed when I took this, which is fast for night-time. It allows just a bit of light to come in, which brings out details much better than overexposing.
