Scribe Orders of Kerkia"I sometimes wonder if it is a good idea to keep the scribes around after all this time, being more trouble than they are worth. Their dedication had become a distraction, they stop an entire campaign so they can stare at crumpled rocks, writing vast volumes of it, and then explaining to me it's significance in some far flung manner. My leader, I request you either send me new scribes, or get rid of them." -Blackguard Lord on Scribes"Historians in the west speak hollow praises of their kings and nobles, but never their darker deeds. Such lies trouble me and my students, for it diminishes the story of our world in such a way to make it a fiction. How does one tell the story of the Geuders without speaking on their ambitions? How does one tell the tales of the Leadership and it's atrocities against their fellow Kerks? Our art is founded by a lich, a fact we take great pride in, for how can one be humble by hiding away the fearsome past?" -Scribe Grandmaster on HistoryThe Kerk's love of writing and knowledge is an ancient tradition which dates back to when they were still in the Riverlands. Yet, their love blossomed and flourished under the studious patronage and reforms of Mel Coldfinger, who was the first true scribe which would dominate Kerkian culture for generations far after his demise. The scribes are studious writers and learners, constantly writing information and copying tomes to keep any and all knowledge available for themselves and their readers. Scribes survived the Kycer when the Coldfingers, the main patrons of the scribe orders, became Illuminated but in honor of their original patron continued to wear the purple colors of the Kycer and adorn themselves in the great cloth uniforms which cover all parts of their body. Most scribe halls even have statues of their infamous first patron, the lich Mel in his true and horrifying glory.
Scribe halls are large libraries and schools in Kerkia where scribes tend to spend most of their days. Becoming a scribe is a life long affair, with each student required by the end of their tutelage to add to the vast book collections and tomes of their libraries. Each student is taught by a higher member in a guild, and each city tends to have one or two scribe halls, with 'outposts' in various government buildings and religious institutions. Scribes spend their time studying the written word, and coming to understand it, but more importantly they retain the lessons of Kerkian historiography which places truthful and honest tellings backed up by primary and trusted secondary sources. Kerkians have a good idea of their own history thanks to the scribe's traditions, whom go to great lengths and do many absurd things in order to gain new information and to study new histories to add to their growing collections. Not all scribes are historians, with many being accountants and collectors of legal documentation which also retain the permanent attention of small legions of scribes.
The scribes are known to be an isolated, and almost cultish, group who distance themselves from their society and clans to fully focus on their documentation and writing. Scribes are often considered necessary for day to day functions, but are also often considered pests to others. Scribes will go to absurd length to preserve history no matter what it is, and their interests often raise eyebrows amongst common folk and the elite alike. Infamously, scribes are known to crowd around chunks of stone, and some scribe orders forged deadly feuds where the various orders will bully and pester one another over minor academic disagreements. Although Kerks are often scribes, many non-jerks also joined the orders as they spread across the Kerkian Empire. This expansion brought with it various new ideals and even games, with the Riverlands table top games becoming deeply popular in the scribe halls in Kerkia.
