Kerkian Missionaries and Witch Hunters"I say onto you, oh son of Kerkia. Your people are not whom I despise, it is their arrogance I have come to despise. It is the foulness, the sin printed upon their foreheads, and the waters which run afoul. Known this, and take heed, for I admire your spirit and your reason, and through it I know more of you. Your people shall see in time what you see now, and through the fount of everlasting life shall you set them towards the bright life I have prepared for them." -3rd Chapter of the Conversations, Holy Book of Illumination"I have seen what the abomination does with the gifts it has, using powers to defy nature it's due and denying the natural state of the world to continue. The witch is a seducer of good creatures to arts of defilement and debauchery most useless, and the warlock revels in their own foolishness. Suffer the abomination's words and mockeries no longer, and know my fury and curses is upon them as well." -1st Chapter of the Conversations, Holy Book of IlluminationIllumination in Kerkia is both orthodox on the surface, but a far cry to most others. The early Kerkian church changed many times over it's years, constantly decentralizing over and over again under the pious care of it's eternal guardians, the Lambs. Kerks are by their nature extremely pious, but this is often seen more realistically as fanaticism which creates strange ideals not present in the original doctrines of the Illuminated Church. Kerks for instance take the conversations with a literal eye, taking calls of humility to an extreme in their culture as much as interpreting more vague passages with strange ideals. Kerks for instance are one of the few Illuminated nations who deeply fear and downright kill prophets, Illuminated non-mages who gain strange powers, often being seen as dangerous and bringers of terrible news. The Kerkian church is also the only Illuminated church which is deeply anti-magic.
Magic became hated for more than just religious reasons amongst the Kerks, as the Kycer of the past used magic to terrifying effect which soured Kerkian love of it. Kerks believe all mages commit acts against nature by using magic, and thus kill and destroy magic users as equals to other abominations such as slavers. Magic however still appears amongst the Kerks, their users being feared and despised. Although some of these mages are found out early and are sent into the hands of the church or the Blackhand, others escape and become rogue mages amongst various bandit clans or becomes angry rebels trying to escape to less restrictive lands. The church of Kerkia employs special hunters, witch hunters, who hunt down and specialize in killing mages. Witch Hunter organizations in Kerkia are often strange and sometimes downright heretical, constantly being in conflict with the church and Leadership over their methods and the autonomy of their organizations.
Kerkian missionary work is a facet unique to the Kerkian church. Although missionaries can be found in any Illuminated hierarchy, the Kerkian church's preachers are often considered quite powerful. Most missionaries in Kerkia are well traveled and experienced talking to other clans, and go into lands such as the Autumn Reich, Middle Kevica, Beastfolk lands, and even Rosarug to spread the message. Despite the constant threats to their life, Kerkian missionaries care little and remain thorns in the side of every nation they find room in. Most missionaries are from mountain clans, who are more well traveled than others.
