Undead Hordes of the Marches"We had hoped these monsters would fight like animals, bashing themselves recklessly into us. No, they flank us when possible, they draw the correct weapons, they parry and use bows. The only difference is that they feel no fear, and if you hit him hard enough, they'll shatter. These are no normal puppets of some necromancer, and that truthfully terrifies me most of all." -Rosari General, 3rd Wendigo MarchThere is a cursed aura which follow Wendigos and their hordes, which have terrified the commanders and kings of Kevica. The cursed aura is known to null and kill magic in its tracks, making it near impossible to use magic in their presence to thin their numbers. Their coming brings coldness to the air, freezes water, and bring a storm of snow which accompanies them at all times. These effects can kill crops, make once impassible rivers crossable, and trap enemies in sudden encampments of snow in the midst of summer. Yet, the most terrifying part of their dark aura is that the dead raise around them, joining their dark hosts of undeath. Different cultures have different names for these undead horrors which follow the Wendigo hosts into battle. The Kerks name them Revenants, the Beastfolk call them Followers, humans call them Ghouls. These hosts of undead are not shambling and mindless as a necromancer's skeletal minion or zombie, but many retain the memory and skill of their former lives, capable of using tools with ease even if their bodies are bound to the slavish will of their Wendigo masters.
Ghouls come from many sources, the most prominent of which was once the bodies of discarded Ice Elves and their human servants. This number expanded to the cairns of Wolffolk and other Beastfolk, raids in Nor Curndia, and brutal system of enslavement of consumed thralls in Yul'Wendigo cities. Used as a slave labor and housed in large crypts for later use, Ghouls are sometimes devoured by Wendigos and Yul'Wendigos alike. Ghouls are not the only type of undead which come forth from the corpses of fallen foes. Sometimes, wraiths are brought back to life from the ashes of the long dead, bound to armor or cloth. Sometimes, unique undead variants and haunting foes come forward to serve the Marches, such as Baykoks, undead snipers who act as sentries and assassins for the Wendigo. Disembodied heads, Ghoul wildlife, and amalgamations of corpses all make their presence known in Wendigo camps.
To some degree, Yul'Wendigos also retain the power to make Ghouls, although their aura is much smaller and meekest. Greater numbers of Yul'Wendigos are needed for this effect to become like that of their dark fathers. Ghouls, like any undead, decay over time and especially on the march as body parts go missing as these undead soldiers lose limbs to their ravenous masters. Ghouls retain some manner of frosted soul, keeping them icy to the touch even in warmer climates. Ghouls are bound to the Wendigo who raised them, and can be commanded at will to do any of their biddings. Ghouls tend to decay much faster without their masters, and will sometimes just downright drop dead without them around. Although Ghouls make up the bulk of the March's armies, they are often considered little more than fodder by their overlords.
