Dark Mercenaries of the Arctic"You fight for gold? Ha! Imagine fighting for something so pointless! This, this is what I fight for." -Yul'Wendigo Mercenary, holding up a severed limb to a fellow mercenaryYul'Wendigos are the half bred sons and daughters of the powerful stag monsters which roam the western north, whose dark empire of undeath and evil creatures roam unchallenged and whose children built a society of brutality and murder to live out their days. Yul'Wendigos come from many races, growing horns upon their heads in the shape of stags and whose eyes become a bright white. The dark creatures crave for flesh and blood, unable to stand cooked or animal meat, the creatures are ghoulish in their thinking and deeply cynical in their beliefs. All Yul'Wendigos were at a time drawn to the dark call of their masters in the marches, and many still serve as foot soldiers to the legions of the dead.
Over time, after a failed March upon the lands of Brachland, the Yul'Wendigo hosts became more autonomous and more free, and with freedom came raids and feuds. The dark beasts began to make their way into the lands of other northern cities, on ships stolen from their masters, to settle new lands as companies of warriors to pledge their swords to whoever will take them in. These slavering creatures made homes in lands such as Nor Curndia, reluctantly allowed to settle as conscripts to the Tsar under specific conditions. In fealty, Yul'Wendigos of these settlements shave their horns into stumps, groom their fur, and are forbidden from eating the corpses or harming the subjects of the Tsar, often including slaves. In return, the ravenous horrors are often hired on with the corpses of enemies, used in wars against the Beastfolk such as in Brachland where a Yul'Wendigo mercenary army broke the kingdom and proceeded to devour their prisoners.
The power and skill of the mercenaries is undeniable, but their loyalty is often dubious at best. Yul'Wendigos have little if any respect for written law, and live by a shadowed religion to a zealous degree. If a mercenary takes prisoners, they are likely to be brought back to their home to be eaten, as the eternal hunger pains is a main drive for their actions. The creatures still are afflicted by the dark curse of the Wendigo, unintentionally raising the dead around them whom they use as a labor force for their blood drenched settlements. Yul'Wendigos still find means to possess powerful rune blades from their dark homeland, paying homage to their 'fathers' back home. Although often accused of being agents of the Silent King and his dark forces, most mercenaries have long been known to side with Nor Curndia over them, as many fear the wrath of their former masters should they ever return.
