Heralds of the Marches"Seven riders in red, killers of mighty armed knights rode out against the black rider who approached them. From head to toe he was covered in black painted armor and lined with fur, the horns of his helm jutted far and wide. The Red Riders approached with spears and swords drawn, but with a single swipe the abomination cut down two and shattered the weapons of the rest! He called out to his dark gods, extended his hand, and a black smoke wrapped itself around one and killed him instantly. His sword was enflamed with ice, and when he was done the black rider stood triumphantly over the dead he had made. He raised his arms, and bid out once brave cavalry to rise." -Account of a Herald, 3rd Wendigo MarchThose who are magically gifted amongst the Yul'Wendigos are denied to be taken to the realm of their enemy, Aran'Burdur, to be tutored by shadow shamans and necromancers. Instead, they are shepherded by the knightly orders of the Heralds, zealous soldiers and knights of the Wendigo Marches. These soldier mages only come from the population of the Yul'Wendigo, with those gifted amongst their slaves becoming dark apprentices to their orders, or those amongst the Wendigos themselves becoming dark seers and priests. Heralds study from the blasphemous Marcher's Tomes, ancient inscriptions in massive books depicting the use of Wendigo Magic. Each Herald has their own individual tome, and copy their spell works down into it. They share their spells with apprentices and 'squires'. It is expected of younger Heralds to tutor under a Herald, and when they are skilled and trusted enough, they are presented for trial in a special spiritual journey for which they are said to return with their armor, their runic blades, and their own tomes for which their order may spread.
Heralds are truly elite and terrifying warriors, but worse yet, are also immortal. Heralds for one reason or another become bound to their books in some manner of corrupted lichcraft, but do not decay or even feel death like a lich. If a Herald dies in battle, their book burns as a result. Wendigo magic is, for one reason or another, supersedes in power to all other magic. The most terrifying thing of Wendigo magic is that it cannot be dispelled or dismantled, all the while their aura nulls magic against them and remains free to dispel at their leisure. Each herald is gifted with a runic armor and weapon, bound in ice magic which is difficult to either pierce or beat. Heralds are meant to be known to take on smaller hosts by themselves, very much capable of achieving great glory on the battlefield. Heralds who lose their books to the enemy have little to worry about, as the magic of the Marcher Tomes makes it impossible for them to be read by mortal eyes and when left unchecked the tomes will return to their masters by some dark means. The purpose of the Herald is within their name, as the dark knights come forward onto battlefields to demand surrender or announce the end of a civilization or people with pride.
Heralds serve the shadowed faith and act as warriors of their own temples within the Marches. Opposed to their arch foes, the Wildar, the Heralds believe their fellow shadow worshippers to be tainted, as it is their 'fathers' who still retain a holy pact with the Shadow, something the Wildar had lost. Heralds serve both their Wendigo masters and other factions within the Marches, although each Herald tends to belong to powerful orders for brotherly support. Individual Knights are rare, as there are no 'hedge heralds' in the Marches, only those who serve or those who forge bonds with powerful religious orders to gain glory and honor. Heralds are strangely chivalric, a Curdan custom which was adopted by them after the 2nd Wendigo march, although most of these chivalric traditions revolve around swift deaths to skilled foes or cruelty being given onto cruel and psychopathic enemies. Very few orders are merciful in the traditional sense, although this 'mercy' tends to be kidnapping and being made prisoners of their cannibalistic realm.
