Combat knife

This is a knife I made at the very end of my professional career as a knifemaker.
Carbon steel blade and fittings, with Brazillian rosewood grip.
The blade and fittings were originally blued, but use and sharpening removed enough of the finish that I eventually scrubbed most of it off so it would not look patchy.
Brazillian rosewood was commonly available when I bought the plank of it I cut this grip from, but has since been added to the endangered species list and is no longer available.
(Its legal to buy, sell and possess pieces of it- you just can't cut anymore of them for sale. I have a few small pieces left.)
I think I made this in somewhere around 1992, so its about 18 years old.
Its held up very well during this time- but then, knives I make tend to.

Rochndil, the sometime (but not yet blade-)smith...
Newer ones are more of a stainless alloy- but they are designed for a high stress application, so they are great for knives and swords.
Older ones are high grade carbon steel, and I made dozens of blades from them.
Its worth checking Ebay- I got a lot group of 10 Stihl bars at about $3 apiece round about 10 years ago, and I have not yet gone through them all.
Having looked last night on a supplier's site at what virgin alloy bars of O-1 tool steel are going for now, I'll keep to my chain saw bars...

Brazillian rosewood grip...........;.;
So lovely
I remember watching a guy turn purple heart wood.....it chipped like rock instead of making wood curls.........
Have you ever carved the wood from bitter sweet or grape vines?
