CCCIX: The Waiting Games
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
I almost titled this page "Never Have I Ever (or) The Waiting Game (or) The Floor is Lava," using the names of three different "social games" that distinctly refer to each group of characters, but decided that was too convoluted, even for this series.
The main reason for switching the focus back upstairs at this point is to show how much time is passing while Cass and Noah set up. When I brainstormed ideas for what the characters upstairs would be doing, they very quickly grew into fleshed-out scenes that would each take up a full page. I distilled them down to their most essential parts and drew single snapshots to quicken the pace.
Thirteen's second line was added to assure readers they aren't drinking alcohol. (Morty's line alludes to that as well, but I wanted to make it very clear.)
EDIT 2/9/23:
This page originally posted with an alternate bottom panel which was crudely drawn because I was coming up on the deadline. I hadn't settled on the exact layout of the unfinished portion of the basement, which was important for the coming scene. In particular, I wanted to arrange the house machinery in a way that Cass could make use of her climbing and perching prowess. The way I drew the basement in the original panel became anachronistic once I drew the following pages, which used a different layout than the first one I sketched for this page. So I wrote a note to myself to redraw the panel. I had trouble finding time to do that as I continued forward with the comic. A little over year after this page was published, I finally sat down and redrew it to what you see here, a more dynamic composition that better shows what Cass and Noah are setting up, and that depicts the basement's true layout.

UTC takes a varying approach to TF. Whether it's "good" or "bad" is framed differently based on the context. Everyone has permanent TFs except for Cass and Noah, who are slowly mutating during this story.
Cass (the goat) was transformed against her will and wants to change back. To do this, she has to change all the way into a goat before she can flip back to fully human (for sciencey reasons).
Noah (the salamander) likes his transformation, but the formula that caused it isn't STOPPING, so he's slowly turning into a full salamander and he's dealing with more and more drawbacks because of that.
Flint (the squirrel) was transformed against his will but ended up loving being a squirrel. But his family thinks it could be a bad thing for his development because he's only 13 and it's forced him out of school and his social life is suffering for it.
Ash (the guy with the red fro) gave himself 2 extra arms and it's going pretty well for him.
