Oli seems suprisingly unfamiliar with the dangers inherent in entering the dragonscape, and the nature of the drekir living within it. It's almost like he was sent off totally unprepared to see how far he'd get before something bad happened. Did he never encounter a drek before heading out? Perhaps needing to depend on someone for safety will break through the wall of denial and superiority Oli has erected around herself.
You cant see into the dragonscape from the outside so the only way to know for sure whats in there is to go in. The leading human theory that Oli was taught before going in as they mention in their first FOE they thought that there was no life left in the Americas and that they were entirely without society. So it isn't a surprise that she wasn't expecting any sort of society or sentient life whatsoever.
Remember also that Oli is the first human ever to enter the dragonscape at the soonest possible time any human really could of so at this point in the timeline very little is known or understood about the Dragonscape from an outside human perspective.
Also yeah Olis just tryin to be a super independent person turned lizard who may only understand half of whats goin on in that lizard noggin and body of hers. Misguided though egos typically are

I've seen older posts where the dragonscale event occurred thousands of years ago, down to only about a hundred. In all cases, human outsiders had established beachheads along the coasts of the Americas, and were interacting with the drekir. I didn't catch the fact that this was literally day one of any attempt to see what was going inside. Regardless, sending someone into an unknown situation that eradicated billions of human lives completely alone seems morally and scientifically inept.
