TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Its one thing to threaten a half-starved Marten that's barely standing and clearly isn't there to fight. Its quite another to threaten one that's 100% raring to fight and clearly intends to kill you on the spot because you're weak prey to them. Hemlock probably has no real experience fighting beyond sneak attacks and fighting in a group with her spear.
To be entirely fair, sneak attacks and group fighting are incredibly effective strategies. They're part of what makes humans so dangerous, we hunt, fight and move in groups. Fighting one-on-one honour duels is for established, civilized society.
Hemlock's big fuckup here was in not waiting for reinforcements, as it made it so that exactly one mistake nearly got her killed as she had nobody to cover her.

If she'd been smart, maybe. But Hemlock strikes me as the type who thinks one little spear makes her invincible, like a safety blanket. Take that away, and what is she? A scared rabbit who can't get over her Survivors Guilt and takes it out on every predator that seems weaker than her. Not that being a sole survivor is a bad thing.
"in shock" actually means "in circulatory collapse". It's much more likely that Sprig is in shock, and Hemlock is just having a mental BSOD.
Circulatory collapse is usually caused by severe bleeding, but can also be instigated by sepsis -- a blood infection. This is when paramedics need to start pouring fluids into your veins or you're quickly going to start approaching room temperature.

Shock can triggered by any major drop in normal blood flow rates, including blood loss from the body but also from simple failure of the heart to keep things going properly. This can occur from sudden physical or mental traumas as well as severe temperature imbalance in the body like hypothermia or heatstroke. With a rabbit that naturally runs on high speed, a mental shock like Hemlock is may be experiencing is not necessarily likely, but not impossible.
Previously she has been exposed to hunters just playing with her and her cubs in the same way that cats play with prey.
Now she is seeing what happens to hunters when life is really on the line. Hopefully is Rask wins she will have better appreciation for what he DOES NOT do amoungst the other.

It looked pretty nasty, but also seemed to be on his left-hand side by the last panel. At least part of it ought to be visible.
I hope Hemlock does absolutely nothing of value and knows it.
The one good thing that can come out of this is her realizing that if Rask had actually wanted to turn on them there was never much they could have actually done to stop him, but he never did regardless (and here he is saving her worthless hide even after she speared him).
All of this would serve as a learning and perspective-granting experience I think they desperately need. Sharp sticks and overconfidence do not fighters make.

The last panel tells all. Rask is confident enough in his skills to attack his father over territory and Hemlock is a dumb bunny, realizing far too late that all the hatred and bravado in the world won't save your life when you look into the abyss and blink. That look. Yeah, Hemlock, you live or die at Rask's discretion now.
