The second time's a charm. Due to the extra tight time constants this Eve of Hallows season, I choose to remake my Old Viking Costume back in 2013 instead of coming up with something new. Besides of shaving time, I wasn't happy the original version as I didn't do everything I wanted.
But I am much happier now with the end results although I still didn't finish all of what I had in mind. I also strayed a bit from being authentic with the horns (people kinda expected that of viking so I added it) and the like but I feel I managed enough to push it to the next level compared to the old setup. In fact, I finally won that Halloween contest at work for the most creative costume. I though I should have won last year but I'll take it. I wrote a huge saga on it on my previous journal/ if you want to bore yoursel... I mean to have an interesting read. You know you really want to. Go right ahead, I'll wait.
Back already? Where was I? Oh, the contest. Got a little bank from it but I just wanted to finally win the thing. Got discouraged for a moment there especially the amount of work I put into these.
Now this is just an overview of what I did. I'll probably post the individual poses eventually along with the different items I made and how I did it. Somebody might be inspired by my techniques perhaps. That would be cool, cool indeed.
Let me know what you guys think. Should I spill all the details? Give my tips and tricks (I used a lot of cheats)?
Oh, I almost forgot. I held the shield upside down in the photos but I was able to correct it in GIMP. Got a bit tricky with the flipped metal boss in the center looking it was caved inward instead of a dome sticking out. So I had to work around that and left it the right way around. I got it to where no one could really tell I made that mistake in the first place.

Thanks, I think I did pretty good too. Still didn't finish everything but got a heck of a lot further in completing the design. I am going to retire this one for a long while before trying another stab at it. I plan to get a 3D printer that I been meaning to buy for long time sometime next year. I figure I can really go wild with that. So many ideas to explore. But vikings are such iconic figures that I'll eventually go back to it, hopefully actually finishing it. I want to achieve close to movie quality as possible. I think the 3D printer will go in a long way toward that as I like working in 3D software and can sculpt some pretty good art when I put my mind to it.
I did that censor bar like thing cause didn't want to scare the kiddies... I mean reveal my secret identity or something like that, yeah.
Yeah, I like it when someone makes their own stuff. Those are the best. Just buying something off the rack and entering a contest seems a it like "cheating" to me you know. Unless they can really act in it and be in character I guess but it has to be top notch sort of thing.
As for the party, there wasn't much of a one this year. Just the contest and some cookies and candies for the folks. The turnout for the contest was low again, just like seven or so people entered and a few more bothered to dress up. Similar to last year. One problem was they didn't announce the event very well. Just a email and a couple of printout on the bulletin board. The production crew doesn't have company email accounts and the cell-leads don't tell them anything so a lot of potential was wasted.
This contrasts with our first year in this building where we had like thirty people signing up. Even had a few group entries, much better turnout. Not only the party info spread out better, we had people back them more into the Halloween spirit with quite a few cubical and offices with spooky decorations. Not so much this year, only like 3 or 4 had anything. Last year we had employees bringing their kids to work for trick-or-treating and I really decked out my area. I was that pirate and would play the part. I even had pirate music playing. This year that part was skipped. Too many new people in the front office I guess. They need to get on the ball and let people know.
Maybe next year it'll be back. I bought a strobe light for this year that I didn't get to use. And I was planning of getting a smoke machine next year too. But I have wait and see on that.
As for my next costume, I have a couple of ideas but still undecided. I really want to go over the top. I am going to finally get a 3D printer and them I can go hog wild with the details. Something cyberpunk themed perhaps. Still have plenty of time to think about it thought I probably won't start until late as I prone to do.
Oh BTW, despite the rain during the 31st, there was lots of people that came to the door for trick or treating. Luckily most of the rain had slowed by then. I gave out nearly the whole bowl of candy. I say the turnout at least equaled last year or slightly higher. Lots of kids must have moved into the neighborhood despite a dragon living in the area.
