Name: Kieran Reynolds
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 185 lbs
Species: Hyena
Physical Description: A male spotted hyena with an average build. He is often dressed in beige pants, a rust colored sleeveless shirt, and a scarf.
Biographical Data
As a young hyena he was raised in a large city in a middle class household. He studied engineering in college as well as civil engineering for his degree. He was selected due to his experience for the Sanctuary program. This was a pre war effort to save the best and the brightest in the event of a nuclear war. Kieran was chosen for Sanctuary Echo, built under one of the cities in California. Filled with doctors, scientists, and engineers it was intended to serve as one of the resources in rebuilding a war damaged world.
When the war occurred nearly all of the residents of Sanctuary Echo arrived in the underground safe haven. One of the few with access to its own satellite, it was allowed the ability to monitor conditions on the surface. This was intended to aid in the eventual restoration of the infrastructure.
When the Sanctuary HQ went offline each Sanctuary was forced to fend for itself. The results were erratic. Divided between the Army, Navy, Air Force, academia, corporate America, and the civilian population the twenty six structures were spread across the nation.
After a few years of living underground, Kieran left the Sanctuary to explore the world and encountered Sierra Walker. The pair have been traveling together ever since.
Personal Statement
"My name is Kieran Reynolds. The company wanted me to record one of these things for the sake of posterity or maybe just because they wanted to give us all something to do. It's been almost five years since the war happened and I still can't believe it. There's no government anymore, no one coming to give us the all clear. It's pretty obvious at this point we're going to have to figure out what to do on our own, but some people still believe the feds will come save us.
I'm not naïve enough to think there's any of my family left out there. They probably died in the initial blast or if not then, the chaos that came after. I've come to terms with it. Don't get me wrong, it still sucks, and I miss them every day. All I know is I've got to leave this place and find out what the old world left behind.
Alison thinks I'm nuts. She's told me if I walk out of the Sanctuary that it's over between us. I've asked her to come with me but she flat out refused. She's in charge of our facility and has stated without question she knows her duty is here. I think she's just afraid, but I can't blame her. I am too. I just know I can't stay here without knowing what's out there. I don't want to, but I'll have to break her heart.
I'm leaving in a week. I've started preparing supplies and where I'll go. Maybe I'll find something interesting..."

Oh man. I know it's not fair, but I'm getting serious flashbacks to Vault-Tec with this Sanctuary stuff. If there's anything I've learned from post-apocalyptic stories, it's that there's always something shady going on in the background! But, that's just my gut reaction, of course. I'm going to reserve judgement until more substantial information comes to light.
Now. As for Kieran, I think he's a lot braver than I would be in similar circumstances. I'd be terrified to try to venture out into the post-war land, knowing that pretty much all the trappings of civilization and law enforcement have gone down the toilet. On the other hand, I can't blame him for wanting to see what's out there and, maybe, if there's anything left to salvage. It's heart-breaking to know he's had to leave what little family he has left behind to do so, but with his fierce determination and obvious intelligence, I can't think of a better friend and ally for Sierra as she makes her way through the world.
He's pretty cute, too. I've always had a bit of soft spot for hyenas, and I love the idea of a heroic, or at least sympathetic hyena character. It makes such a nice change from always seeing them portrayed as villains.

I'll be honest, Fallout is one of my favorite post apocalyptic settings. I've played every game several times through (though I have slacked off on 4 and not yet finished it). One of my favorite elements was the different Vaults and what the company did to the people inside. I was so fascinated by going inside and pulling apart the clues to tell the story in reverse. My favorite was from New Vegas, where you find one where everyone is dead and it turns out they were led to believe their power and water would be shut off if they didn't sacrifice their leader every year. It resulted in infighting, chaos, and the eventual death of every single person save five people until one person said no, and it turns out no one need have died if they had just done that in year one.
While I could not do that sort of thing exactly, several things in the series are inspired by Fallout and it's setting, and so too the Sanctuary program is my version. The difference however is that mine is not a social experiment but more what would happen if each group was allowed absolute power over their habitats, and what would emerge from each one?
Most of the others are afraid to see what's out there and leave their safe haven, but Kieran just has to know what was left behind. Driven by his curiosity, he sets out to answer that question for himself, even though he loves Allison.
I've never understood always casting certain species as villains. Like any race you get your distribution of good and bad individuals, and hyenas are often seen as villainous perhaps but I don't see them that way. To me, they're just like any other species, and while I had chosen his species just because I hadn't done one yet, I'm happy to provide a different example of a hyena protagonist. Ironically his original backstory had him as a criminal being one of the few surviving experts on a military battleship design after a terrorist attack. However, I like this version better.

I've only ever played the first two Fallout games, so I don't know too much about the others. But it is quite a fascinating world, and it's one of my favorites as far as post-apocalyptic settings are concerned, too. Still, even if it provided some inspiration, I hate it when people come at me with "that sounds just like this other person's work!", when I try to put my own spin on things. I guess its inevitable, since everything's been done. But I have no doubt that you'll be able to put a new and unique spin on the Sanctuaries and their effects on the people who inhabit(ed) them.
I really don't get it, either. I suppose, with hyenas, there are a lot of people who make them villains because they were in The Lion King. Which I disliked, because I find hyenas rather more interesting than lions, but what they hey. I agree, though, that there's plenty of room for individuals of all stripes in any given species, and it makes for a much more interesting world, I think.

I got the first two on steam, haven't really played too far since I think I stopped somewhere during one and got distracted by other games. It's always a fun setting, particularly because I was fascinated with the way the world would interpret remnants from ours, what people might think who didn't know our world. While it did inspire me I made an effort to take the concept and make it unique to my world, which I think it will accomplish the best of both worlds. :)
Personally I rather like to create each character as an individual of their species. After all, I wouldn't want anyone lumping all zebras or all humans or all werewolves under the same stripe. :)
