Biographical Data
Sierra Walker is the daughter of Colonel Jonas Walker of the United States Air Force. As a military daughter raised by a single father Sierra learned early the concepts of duty and honor. They moved frequently depending on where he was posted but the two always stayed together and formed a close bond.
Jonas taught his daughter how to survive in the wild and use weapons as soon as she was old enough. When she was a teenager they would go camping regularly in between his assignments.
Sierra attended a public high school until the day of the war. Having to move from school to school she was often limited in how many friends she could make.
After the war she traveled the wasteland with a male hyena she met shortly after she emerged from her underground shelter.
Personal Statement
"Before the war, people cared about your name. Afterwards, they just shoot first and ask questions later. Most folks don't know me, but my name is Sierra. My father was part of the United States military before shit hit the fan. I was 17 when it all happened. I remember the world as it used to be like a long forgotten dream. Sure, there are remnants around of what the world left behind, but given how every day is a struggle for survival I don't really remember what it was like to go to the mall or to buy your food at a store.
When the war happened I was at school. The sirens went off and I ran home to find my father. He wasn't where he said he would be. I know he was probably still on duty but I'd hoped he'd have come home and hid in our shelter with me. He left me everything I needed to survive the bombs. I stayed underground as long as I could, but after two weeks I had to come out before I ran out of food. I searched for him, but after learning rather quickly how far the world had fallen to pieces I moved on.
I met a hyena named Kieran, and together we started roaming what was left of the country. We survive by salvaging bits of prewar tech and selling it. A lot of it still works. For now, it's as good a way to make a living as anything. We mostly stick to our area which is governed if you can call it that by some big corporations or some such. It doesn't make a difference to me since they mostly leave us little folks alone. They say some crazy things about what's east of here. I've heard tales of a city of light and nuclear submarines still in operation, but that couldn't be true after the war, could it? They say some folks survived underground in shelters called Sanctuaries. I've never seen one, but it wouldn't surprise me. I wonder what things would be like down there."

I feel like I've mentioned this before, but post-apocalyptic stories have always been a bit of a weakness of mine. I rather blame a youthful fascination with Ray Bradbury and his flirtation with the subject. I suppose part of it is that it's at least conceivable that such a thing could really happen, albeit without the more fantastic elements that are often presented, such a ravening mutants or intelligent robots. And it's interesting to see how each author handles the situation and what sorts of characters they chose for their protagonists, or even just who they think might survive the tragedy. Sierra strikes me as a remarkably tough young lady to have gone from your fairly standard high school student to surviving for six years in such a world, more or less by herself. Of course, her training from her father beforehand no doubt helped with that, but there's still a huge difference between a trained soldier and a seventeen-year-old with a bit of hands-on experience. I'm definitely curious to know more about her, and about her hyena friend. And especially to know if she ever does find her father again.
My inspiration for this project was entirely based on my enjoyment of the Fallout series. I'm particular about my post apocalyptic series and there are only a few that have gone in a direction I really like. There are some similar concepts but by and large it's a different universe since I want to explore some other areas and take things in my own direction. One of the things I enjoy is seeing what the world becomes and how it changes from the old world.
While at some point you may see some of those fantastical elements, I think you'll like what I've got planned.
As is my penchant for protagonists I knew I wanted a female lead. For some reason I just don't do male protagonists, as the primary character. LOL. Anyway, Sierra's story took the longest to sort of develop an overall plan. She originally had a male companion named Dalton, but he was dropped in favor of Kieran, a character I already had who got reassigned from another universe. With Sierra, I wanted her young enough so she would still be forming her perception of the world but old enough so she would be credible as a protagonist. It's funny you should mention that, as after the comic when the written story begins, she runs into a pair of soldiers who teach her a few things.
As for the last part, that's still in the air, believe it or not. I haven't decided what or how or even if she'll ever find an answer to that question. :)
