Kyle and Chris became surrogate parents to Topaz after her mother's death. Kyle is second in command of the Talwyn resistance after Chris.
Personal Statement
"My name is Kyle Simon. When I was a young giraffe I never thought of myself as tall. I always wondered why all of the other species were shorter than I was. I guess it's because we all think of ourselves as normal. My childhood was pretty unremarkable, no siblings or anything, but when I was old enough I joined the military and met up with a ram that would become my best friend.
We happened to be assigned to the same group during training and it turned out we just naturally synced together. Before I knew it we were eating all our meals in the mess together and doing just about everything as a team. Someone must have noticed because when we graduated we were assigned to the same unit. Afterwards he and I were inseparable. We served in various capacities until we were tapped for Captain Everett's unit. They were tasked with assignments requiring a certain level of ingenuity. Chris and I fit right in.
Our commander was the husband of a Talwyn master. As a result we were frequently sent on missions issued straight from the Tower.
As the war heated up Chris and I were sent more and more often behind enemy lines. When it was clear we were going to lose the war, at least without a change of strategy, the Talwyn masters and President Lisa Evans gave us a new assignment. Form a resistance and slow the Ashurian efforts any way we could. Once the government had pulled out the capital city of Vanskar became our battleground. Since then we've done our best to resist their control and await the day the president and the masters return in force. For now, we wait.
On the last day of the war we encountered the wife and daughter of our former captain. Her mother was dying, so we took her in and protected her. She became a member of the resistance and I suppose it's only appropriate we became her surrogate parents given her father had mentored us so well. I only hope we do his daughter justice."

On of the most fun parts of this new profile, for me, is getting to see, or re-visit, each of your characters and get a better picture in my mind of what they look like while reading the stories. It's interesting to see how well my own mental image of them squares with their official appearance and, except for picturing him in a uniform rather than casual clothes, my mental image of Kyle was pretty much spot on. Which is really nice, because I've always kind of imagined him as a really nice guy and I really like how sweet he looks in this image.
In a way, it's a shame that his backstory is so bitter-sweet. But at the same time, it's an interesting story all on its own, and it really speaks to his strength of character and his gentleness in wanting to not only look after Topaz as a fellow member of the resistance but as a surrogate parental figure as well. It takes quite a remarkable person to do that, I'd think.

I think it's really also nice to have a rogue's gallery of sorts for the cast, I've tried to post them mostly in order to their relevance/prominence in the story, though also chronologically where I can. For example, I'm not sure if I should post some characters that won't appear until later or save them until it might be more relevant. Anyway, the profile and the personal statement really helps me to get into their personality in a way you may not see during the course of the story.
When he's not on duty he's generally friendly and generous. As a soldier, he's definitely the sort of person you want at your side or guarding your back. He's the sort of character who would do anything for you simply because you asked. He's a skilled sniper and is taller than most mammals so he's not the sort you want to pick a fight with without a good reason. While I'd thought about getting him in uniform (a picture still pending) he and Chris spend a good part of the story out of them so I thought either would suit. :)
It was one of those happy accidents that it developed that way. When I was trying to figure out how to accomplish certain plot points as efficiently as possible it solved several problems at once given what I wanted to happen before and after. It put all of the characters in the right groupings and made sense given their history and relationship with the other characters. Plus I think it really fit their personalities. Captain Everett engenders loyalty in his men, how could they make any other choice but to take his daughter in and keep her safe?
