RAZOO! Characters. "Raz" Raccoon.

Here's one of the pages I sketched out last Sunday night and into Monday morning. This is kind of a character development sheet for "Raz" Raccoon who I'm finding easier and easier to draw. I was once advised that if I ever wanted to draw a "Daily strip," I'd have to get to a point where I can draw the characters in my sleep. I woke up this morning to this "Surprise," Scanned it, cleaned it up in Photoshop, nd now here it is. I used a Palomino "Blackwing" on Strathmore "Biggie" sketch paper. Now I understand why the Blackwing 602 pencils are favored by those in the Animation industry.

The only useful advice I was given before I started drawing webcomics is "ignore any comment that compares your work to anyone elses comic." And it still holds true today.

In two of those figures I have trouble telling of her eye are shut or her pupils are missing...?

Yeah. It's that black mask that hides Raz's long eyelashes, and I can understand the confusion. I tend to draw the "Little Orphan Annie" eyes for malevolently evil characters, or if they're blind, but I might just try another drawing "Shortcut" to indicate Raccoon eyes are closed. A fellow I'm watching hereon FA who goes by the "Handle" of "Waccoon" usually has blank, white eyes on his Raccoon characters, and he puts extra long eyelashes on his female raccoon character named Tawny. Of course whenever I draw Raz, she'll have those "B-B in a butterplate" style eyes with visible pupils.

I always did wonder why a raccoon would have white, and not black, eyelids...

Oh gosh yes! I really enjoyed reading Walt Kelly's Pogo comic strips in the daily papers as a youngster, and I often look to Kelly's work for inspiration on how to better my brush inking style. It kind of bothered me that Pogo didn't look like the O'Possums I used to catch and play with in the Avocado groves behind my home, but later on I came to appreciate Walt Kelly's style. For example it kind of bothered me as a child why Miz Ma'm'selle Hepzibah had an all too human looking face instead of the cute, weasel like faces I saw on the actual skunks around the groves. After I got into "Furry" Fandom I learned that there was a good reason behind Mr. Kelly's "Little visual joke." I re discovered Ma'm'selle Hepizibah's "Charms," and I now appreciate Kelly's comic storytelling skills by putting a little bit of Ma'm'selle Hepzibah's "Personality" into some of the anthropomorphic Skunk characters I draw.

Ah, yes: I remember reading some of the old Pogo collections at my grandmothers' house; and slightly later, when the strip was running in the local paper. Now, I'm picking up the recent complete anthologies as they appear (they're up to vol. 3 now).

In vol. 1, I noticed Walt originally drew Hepzibah with a more bulbous nose: as he went on, she became a little more humanized and 'sexy'...

I still am in awe of his erudition and wordplay - not to mention his mad skills with brush and pen. 7@=e

I also dug the way he'd use different letter fonts for various, other characters like the Hound Dog Preacher that "Spoke" in biblical style old English. There was also another visual gag of his where Pogo and his pals would be poling a punt through the swamp, and the names painted on the sides of the watercraft would change... like five times.

I miss my comic comment lines already. Anyway, I want to keep things warm, fuzzy and cute. Truth is that there's a lot of characters living here at "The Zoo" in real life, but I don't want to portray things exactly as they are. So every once in awhile "Artist, Muse," a Unicorn or, even a robot will drop in for a visit.

LOL! Yes portraying things as they are could have the effect of shortening said artists life expectancy. Even if the muse thinks it's a great idea, those involved may see other wise including said artist.

Here's my plan. I need to come up with about two weeks of comics for a start, or perhaps two month's worth. (That's 64 strips my friend.) -Just like they do with the syndicated Newspaper strips. I don't even know how to build a website yet. So I've got a lot to learn and plenty to draw. I just hope I can keep the ball rolling.

What a blast from the past! I wanted to hire on at the Flying Tiger Saloon as a cook, but I never had the ability to get online and stream like I can now. Things haven't changed much though because when we get on the chats like for Wolf Kidd's stream, I'm like trying to seriously conduct a conversation with the artists and my friends there while most the others are plying their character's roles making "Hanky Panky" in the background. Most times it can be a lot of fun, but I'm a painfully slow typist.
