the gate is the portal between the alchemy world and the real world, souls of the departed in the real world pass though the gate and their souls become the energy for alchemy in the alchemy world. the gate is also a abyss to where your soul is sent if you do forbidden alcehmy.
they use it for fixing everyday thing and use it in combat, like making stone spikes inpale people or make a hose to drown out a raging fire. or make a doorway on a buliding to enter, anything you can think of, expect human transmutaions, meaning bring the dead back to life or changing the nature of your body.
