The candy trade was every bit as important (and fun) as the trick or treating itself. There was something immensely gratifying about sorting the various mini-bars, lollipops, taffies and gumballs into little rows and piles... it was like making a candy bazaar. Trading, of course, was a haggling system based on the perceived value of the candy (deliciousness and rarity were the key factors). One fun-sized Butterfinger was usually worth two or three lesser candies, like loose Tootsie Rolls and maybe a Hershey's Kiss.
The real treasures, of course, were the oddball ones you only ever found one of in your bag, the strange off-brand ones that you didn't recognize. Those, of course, weren't for trading.
