The legendary form known as Super Saiyan is a form that has been passed down in Saiyan Lore for countless Millenia. The transformation can only be unlocked by a Saiyan of pure heart, and must be triggered by a desperate need, a high enough power level, and an intense burst of anger, grief, or sorrow. Once awakened, the Saiyans abilities are boosted 50 fold, and they become seasoned battle hungry warriors.
In Minato's case, the constant desire to surpass his limits after losing his ocular powers was the key to unlocking this form for the first time. With further training, he had come to fully master this power, maintaining it for an indefinite period of time and was able to exert more power into his abilities rather than waste any on maintaining the transformation itself.
