You could lower the opacity nearer the light source, like in a gradient, so it doesn't appear as harsh. (Like get the eraser and set it huge and low opacity and just erase a few sections higher up) that's what I do when I feel my shadings too intense. But it all depends on the light source x3 some light would cause that much shading
