I was thinking of the book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" which is a childhood favorite of mine. NIMH stands for National Institute of Mental Health and the rats were lab rats but the experiments gave them human quality intelligence and they escape and form their own society. It's a really good book and the rats are the heroes.
