Much as with previous Super Mario World map screens, this was done by making all of the sprites double sized, and thus more detailed.
Also holy crap, Nintendo, you made a GREAT map here. It is so freaking amazing. i LOVED making this thing, and it is now my favorite video game map.
I love how the entrance to Valley of Bowser turned out here, as well as the ghost ship. This was certainly one of those "labor of love" things, and I was happy to make it. =3

You're welcome ^^ It is indeed an excellent map.
Yeah, the ship is well-done, such as with the subtle hull damage. And the Valley of Bowser entrance has that nice "sinister" vibe.
I was curious about something, though, that I noticed after playing some earlier. I was wondering about two paths on the map that appear (to me) to be missing. The one from the Donut Secret House to the pipe, and the water trail from Castle 6 to the Sunken Ship. Pardon me if I'm sounding a tad nit-picky.

Well with all of the things on this map I was bound to forget something. XP
And yes, relooking at the complete map I did.
The problem was I had like 2 seperate maps to use as referance, one that was a .png file that was crystal clear, but had none of the paths formed.
And one that did have all of the paths, BUT, was a grainy .jpeg file.
So I had to flip-flop between the two.
And if you wanted to get REALLY picky, none of the castles should still be standing either.

I can understand missing a small detail here and there with a project this size. The with the reference maps dilemma has happened to me too. In my case, it was for Donkey Kong Country.
Hehe, good point about the castles, too. I don't mind seeing the un-demolished versions, though. It's a good opportunity for details.
Forgot to mention before that I think the boos are cute, too. I noticed you have each one in a slightly different position, too. So many details (in more than one way) to applaud you for.
Oh, I wanted to mention that I was thinking of drawing the overworld from the perspective of the Yellow Switch Palace mountain. Still kinda planning the idea out, but I thought you might be interested in hearing about it. I also think your map version here would also make a great detail reference to work from.

And here it is. The start of the idea. ^^ Kinda more of a angle layout, but I wanted to show what I've come up with so far.
