Put simply, this theme I just for how cool it looks. I've always had a fascination with using colors with simple lighting- it creates interesting values and contrast. In addition I do very much enjoy with value subtraction than addition.
The odd contrasts, glows and lighting effects you can achieve with these themes can convey mysterious or magical environments or themes. As you can see the difference between the markings on Spider as well as Rad. Rad is more natural and generates his own light whereas spider's markings just seem to appear from an unnatural source and offer no visible light to other surfaces.
Its just a peculiar concept to use in artwork and creates incredibly visually appealing works.

I'm loving this series so far, but this one may be my favorite, visually. I've had this same fascination with glowy crap for a looooong time. Seriously, put some LEDs in something and it's immediately 5x as appealing to me. I love the unnatural glow of colorful lights like this. I never actually considered the idea of magical glow that DOESN'T light up its surroundings. That's a tough concept to grasp, but I guess it does fit with my usual ideas of elemental magic. It's like how fire magic won't burn the one who conjures it. Depending on the rules of that world's magic, anyway. The same flame could burn one person and just feel nice and warm to another, so I guess a light could appear when seen directly, but be unable to reflect on any surface.
ooo awesome '.=.' this sounds like fun to add to meh character.
Originally i was gonna have meh dragon 'sona have glowy markings where the darkblue parts are. Perhaps i'll come to you when i'm FINALLY ready to make the stupid character sheet lD
only one thing tho. The markin UNDER Rad, is that one on his tail?

Having a glowing character myself, I never really thought much on why she glowed. But I agree with of what Bitcoon said in the fact that I am utterly drawn and fascinated with glowing things and LEDs and all that fun stuff <3333
Since it's Mint's fur that glows, my only thought on it is that it is parts of her skin that also glows, but the "fur" covering it is kind of like polar bear fur, meaning it's hollow, so the glow of her skin comes through it.
