I'd be hard pressed to pick between Spotted and Striped Hyenas. And this way I don't have to. 11x10 acrylic on illustration board. Prints available, Original will be the MFF art show.

The "Crocuta crocuta" genus and specie.

Technically, spotted hyenas are a creature all of their own as they lack the "hyaena" genus.

Then there's the variation - "crocuta crocuta spelaea" Which is just a variant of spotted hyena.

Yikes there are so many Mongoose! While I was in AFrica this year I saw five different types and that was only a fraction. Best moment was heading back to my room at one of the lodges and seeing some of the hotel workers chasing 30 Banded Mongoose out of an area. It was like a wave of stipes! Don't worry, they weren't hurting them, the little guys just make a mess in the garden the workers told me so they roust them out occasionally:)

Wow I love the expressions on their muzzles and the overall pic is quite heart warming. Who can choose over which hyena is better looking? Difficult to say.
