An animatronic Parasaurolophus in the temporary Dinosaur! exhibit at the Minnesota Zoo.
It's name means “like crested lizard” because it had a long, hollow and bony crest.
Parasaurolophus was 40 feet long and weighed about two tons. At 16 feet tall, its most impressive attribute was its head crest at nearly six feet tall. Paleontologists suspect that the crest may have been used to make sounds, enhance smell and aid in mating displays.
What They Ate: Herbivore (plant eater) Parasaurolophus travelled in herds, perhaps even migrating through diverse habitats to find leaves, fruits, twigs and shrubs of their liking.
Where Fossils Have Been Found In North America: New Mexico, Utah and Alberta, Canada.
What They Did: Parasaurolophus babies were born without fully formed limbs. Parents would feed and protect young for eight to nine months before they would leave the nest. It is believed they may have followed mom around in a similar manner to ducklings.
How They Are Doing: Extinct. Lived in the Cretaceous Period, 76-65 million years ago.
