"Bears!" Iorek Byrnison roard. An echo rang back from the palace walls an startled birds out of their nests He went on: "The terms of this combat are these. If Iofur Raknison kills me, then he will be king forever, safe from challenge or dispute. If I kill Iofur Raknison, I shall be your king. My first order to you all will be to tear down that palace, that perfumed house of mockery and tinsel, and hurl the gold and marble into the sea. Iron is bear-metal. Gold is not. Iofur Raknison has polluted Svalbard. I have come to cleanse it. Iofur Raknison, I challenge you."

Oh Iorek! One of the many "inappropriate" crushes I had in grade school. Truth be told, still kinda crush until today...
You really caught the weight and lumbering form of the bears. Just the heavy-set armored forms, and the lovely additive of the foreground composition really strikes it as "mes en scene" quality!

Oh, man, that's a compliment of the highest order! I would go nuts if I could make an illustrated edition of the whole trilogy later in life!! I know what you mean about the mind's eye though, but, man, that series BEGS to be illustrated/made visual in some way, shape, or form, in some parts!!
*nods* It sure does.
Though I hated it when it became more widely known as "Golden Compass" and with the alethiometer depicted as such... I read the European edition, and the reference to the chart compass is very important... "Thanks" to whoever decided to illustrate it that way...

I think the wikipedia article explains it pretty well -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northe.....Lights_(novel)
Essentially, the compass referred to in the book title is the tool to measure distance, used by the God Architect when creating the Universe, not the tool showing direction to find something.

Oh, oh, I knew that. Sorry, I just got confused by your wording. I'm still not in understanding the purpose of changing the title since it creates confusion. :|a
Northern Lights sounds prettier anyway and is more relevant. I always hated the illustration for the Amber Spyglass myself, because I pictured it not so gilded and refined looking. Ah well.

*nods* Well, it's the publishing business... They put some stupid name to the title most of the time, especially, in trilogies... In fantasy/fiction, it's some object, often irrelevant, but "the style!" dictates every book in series should be named after some artifact...
Even though "golden compass" name in itself wasn't bad, the decision to draw the wrong object sure was... Especially since most people nowadays don't know what chart compass is, so instead of educating and drawing attention to "Paradise lost", it just messes things more...

I love how, in so many incarnations of His Dark Materials, the educating/revelation/controversy is left out of it when that's one of the overarching....points. It's really a shame. I think it's a shame the books don't get the same attention as Narnia/LOTR/Harry Potter either, bleh
Yes!!!! Be quick to get the third book, because the second ends sorta abruptly (I feel bad for anyone who had to wait for the book to actually be released). Bt UGH, it gets even BETTER by the third.
Thanks so much! I love trying to get close to what books say, because I always seem to be disappointed by most illustrated versions of novels. Sometimes it's like they haven't even read the description.
