The preserve is nearly urban. It's a stretch of pine barrens that had been maintained by periodic anthropogenic fires which created a novel ecosystem on the nutrient-poor glacial till left over from the last ice age. The city grew around it. Highways are not butterfly friendly, not terribly people friendly either.
