Yep. Max is a Magma, and I doubt he likes the Grunt uniform. If you noticed Max's and Wolf's colors were a bit odd that's because I used colors from the Pokemon Anime.

What would Max have against water? Well he gets sea sick, he can't swim that well, and water makes him sluggish. In the Pokemon world he would join Team Magma with his with his Tepig who is probably already Emboar.
