Wanted, a young enthusiastic person to participate scientific studies. No College degree needed. Reimbursement pay in the €3000 per month for each study. Interested parties apply at Dr. Olborn's office at the city university.
It was this newspaper ad that starred into the eyes of a recently unemployed youth, Joseph. To the world, he was just another statistic in the troubles in European Debt crises, but to Joseph, he was without a job. Lately he would have put in the effort, but at €3000 a month, he couldn't pass up that offer.
'What's the worst that can happen?' Joseph thought 'a short walk to the university, which was on the way to mass anyways and they say no?' With that he quickly slammed the laptop closed, which accidently shut down the laptop and deleting the story he was working on for the TF-Tail's writing contest and rushing off to put on his best clothes and go to the university.
Along the way Joseph's thoughts began to run amuck. 'What if the position is already taken? I hope that I'm not late to mass. How busy will it be? At €3000 the place has to be full right? Did I overdress for the position? Who is this Dr. Olborn?' These thoughts made Joseph's head spun making him almost sick all the way to the Science Centre's Genetics' Office. Inside, the reception room was completely vacant of people except for a receptionist on the left.
'"Dobro jutro," the receptionist said to Joseph.
"Um… Bok… Is this where I can find Dr. Olborn?" Joseph asked waverly.
"Yes it is," she replied "Answering for the research position?"
"Um, yeah, something like that,'' Joseph said "I just thought that it'd be packed in here because of the economy."
"Yeah, it's a bit of a surprise," the receptionist said "A lot of people have come by this morning in dresses and suit and ties but as soon as they see the position is in the Genetics Department they high tail it out of here. You're the first to make it all the way to the door let alone to the front desk. Oh I almost forgot to introduce myself; I'm Mirjana, Mirjana Pavičić. Should I go fetch Dr. Olborn?"
"Oh, yeah and I'm Joseph" he replied.
"Okay, Joseph, I'll go get him for you, I'll be right back" Mirjana flirted as she walked away. As she did Joseph's eyes were drawn down to her skirt, where he thought he saw a small tuft of white fur meandering back and forth. Seeing this Joseph shook his head and rubbed his eyes and by the time he was able to take a double take she was gone.
'Man, I should get some more sleep, and less time online' Joseph thought to himself, 'I'm starting to see things,'
Joseph was left sitting in the waiting starring at the yellowing walls whose last coat of paint predates the country's independence. He looked around to the magazine which was almost as old as the paint, but Joseph figured that it would help pass the time. The next few seconds seemed like minutes for Joseph, and minutes like hours as he paged through one magazine after another until he finished the whole pile, and then begun to count the ceiling tiles while pacing back and forth impatiently.
"Jeste um... li er... Yo-sip?" Asked an older man in a stereotypical white lab coat tan pants and button up shirt with graying hair, speaking in broken Croatian and a worse American accent.
"I do know English," Joseph responded.
"Oh good, well then, I wasted all that time looking for that English-Croatian dictionary," he muttered to himself, "I'm Doctor Olborn."
"I'm Joseph, and I was wondering if your position in the newspaper was still available?" Joseph responded with a waver in his voice.
"Well I posted it a month ago, and the only other person to respond to the ad is only has been Mirjana, and she's only been able to help out as part time since she's also the department's clerical worker." Dr. Olborn said, "So if you can work full time you're hired"
"That sounds great!" Joseph said and then looked over to Mirjana at the reception desk and my heart began to sink thinking that he just took way her job.
Dr. Olborn seeing this quickly jumped in saying "Don't worry, I'm looking for another helper, not a replacement,"
"Oh Okay then when do I start," Joseph then perked up thinking about his great turn of fortune, a new job, good health and he's going to be early to church even.
"Well I'll be going to M.I.T. for the week, I'll be back on Wednesday, and I suppose you can start then," Dr. Olborn replied," Shoot, Speaking of which my plane departs in 2 hours!"
"Okay, I'll see you then," Joseph replied and left looking back at Mirjana who was at the filing cabinet pulling some tests out for an older lady (whom he would later find was the head of the genetics department). And he could almost swear he more fur as she gave him a wink on his way out.
'I wonder if Mirjana was flirting with me?', 'I wonder what Dr. Olborn will have me do today?', 'Odd to start a job on Ash Wednesday,', 'What did I have for breakfast this morning?' Joseph's thought wondered thought out the line for the Anointment of the Ashes for Ash Wednesday and the rest of the mass which took forever to finish.
An hour and half hour later Joseph arrived at the genetics department with the ash cross still on his head, and proceeded to Mirjana who still was standing at the photo copier.
"You're Joseph right?" She asked giving a smile showing off her glimmering white teeth, something about them didn't seem right about them but he didn't want to stare too long.
"Yeah, your Mirjana right?" Joseph asked
"Yeah," she stated with another wink and he could have sworn he saw a tail wagging.
"Um, Dr. Olborn office is down the hall right?" Joseph said with little bit freaked out expression on his face.
"Yeah, third door on the left" Mirjana said with her face now beat red.
He then proceeded down the hallway and looked for the third door on the left and peered into the open doorway where Dr. Olborn sat behind a very messy desk deep into his work.
"Um, Dr. Olborn?" Joseph asked making Dr. Olborn jump.
"Ah Joseph, so that's where you were, Oh wow it's Ash Wednesday today, wow I lost track of the time," Dr. Olborn surprised by the date.
"Yeah," Joseph said in a slight bewilderment of how a person with a Ph.D. in genetics could be so bad with time, "So can we begin?"
"Ah yes, straight to the point, well then I like that," Dr. Olborn said quickly snapping around to his experiments. "Well Joe, uh mind if I call you Joe?"
"Um, No I guess not" Joseph said once more shying down to his new employer.
"Okay then, I would imagine you know of dragons?" Dr. Olborn stated almost like he knew that Joseph was almost boarder line obsessed with dragons.
"Yeah, I am some of my classmate kind of teased me about it in the gymnasium," Joseph said a little sheepishly.
"Wonderful! Let's go down to the lab then," Dr. Olborn said "But first I'll need you to sign this, It's a small waver from the university saying that you are a willing participant and that you agree to the €3000 a month as pay for your involvement in the experiment while the experiment is ongoing."
"Okay," Joseph said quickly reading over the document and then signing and on the bottom of the page along the line.
"Great, now this way!" Dr. Olborn said as he left his office door and proceeded down the hall. "You've heard of dinosaurs correct? Many years before man began using the word dinosaur world spoke of and recorded dragon bones scattered across the globe. This practice continued into the 1800's and including this university. About 3 years ago I came across a box of bones from the 1740's in the fossil records marked "Dragons Bones" and that gave me an idea. European dragons typically have the head and body of a t-rex, with some triceratops and pterodactyl mixed in."
"Okay, I suppose so, I never thought of it that way," Joseph said as Dr. Olborn opened a door labeled 'LABORATORIJ 31'.
"Okay, so where do I come in?" Joseph said as he got a view of the vast room. Large tubes filled the center of the room, off to the right side of the room a large bank of Elbrus computers dating to 1980s on the other side. Off to the left was a set of desks with a large assortment of scientific equipment from beakers and Bunsen burners to highly specialized equipment Joseph had no idea of the name with many different button which looked like an over glorified oven with a large glass door. Operating this contraption was Mirjana who was looking straight at me.
"Joseph, good to see that you made it to Dr. Olborn's office okay," She said walking towards us with a seductive walk her lab coat draping over her purple blouse and skirt. Once more Joseph noticed fur swinging from one side to the other reminding him of a tail wagging. Joseph perplex by what he was seeing a very beautiful young woman now standing in front of him with a fox tail moving slowly back and forth.
"No, you're not seeing things; Mirjana actually does have a tail," Dr. Olborn said.
"Yes isn't cute, I normally have to keep it under my skirts but down here I get to be as foxy as I want. After all it was my paper that allowed us to develop the infuser." Mirjana said boastfully turning around so that her tail was front and center.
"Uh, so where do I come in?" Joseph asked wondering what was about to happen, his mind completely baffled what he was actually seeing.
"Joseph, what would I you do if I was about to offer you a chance to be a first?" Dr. Olborn asked.
"A first, what?" Joseph asked even more confused than when he found out the tail was real.
"The first real dragon," Dr. Olborn said, "I have spent the last 3 years developing the proper DNA combinations of different dinosaurs to make you into a full blown honest dragon. In the meantime Mirjana has been working with the head of the department to make not only a proof of concept animal DNA infuser but an entire system to convert a human into any animal or combination of animals, hence why Mirjana only has a fox tail and canines."
"I, it's, to be a dragon? It's been my life dream," Joseph said even more weirded out by the events that has transpired, even pinching himself to prove to himself it wasn't a dream.
"Good," Dr. Olborn said as he walked into the lab
"Let's get started. Now if you get into the 3rd chamber, Mirjana is that one ready to go?" Dr. Olborn asked Mirjana
Mirjana was quick to answer "Yes!" and her tail picked up speed eager to start the process and lead Joseph into the chamber and locked him into it.
"Okay Joseph, this is your last chance to back down" Dr. Olborn said sternly
"Make me a dragon," Joseph said gulping down his courage.
"Okay Mirjana do it" Dr. Olborn said closing the door.
"My pleasure," she said from the neighboring computer terminal and quickly commenced clicking away on the keyboard.
Orange smoke quickly filled the chamber, deep thick smoke Joseph couldn't make out his hand from his elbow. His lung struggled to hold in the air he gasped seconds prior to the smoke filling the chamber finally failing in a deep exhale and a quick inhale bringing the orange fog deep into his lungs and on into his blood creating a calming effect. Twenty-five minutes passed and Joseph was almost lulled to sleep from the sedatives in the chamber.
"Okay, that's enough Mirjana. Turn on the fan and blow out those nanobots. Unlike you he can't transform inside the chamber." Dr. Olborn yelled over the hum of the equipment.
Mirjana following the orders activated the fan and in less than a minute opened the clear chamber. Inside sat a barely responsive Joseph, his eyes had turned completely gold, with a cat like pupil, the gold iris filling the entire eye with no whites. His skin had already begun the process of growing scales turning a brilliant gold except on his chest which was turning a vibrant crimson. Small bumps then started to form on his back as bone and flesh began to form his soon to wing structures.
"Mirjana quick we have to get him out of the chamber and into a more personal room. If the experiment is a complete success he'll grow to twice his current size." Dr. Olborn said frantically.
"Da," Mirjana said grabbing Joseph's feet which now developed thick hard calluses as his toes had already merged in the fog into 3 toes tipped with large silver talons. His hands now sported 4 fingers each with matching silver talons and similar yet softer pads.
As they carried Joseph his skin had completely developed almost armor like scales and his wings now having 6 supporting figures spread with red membrane between each. A silver talon now piercing through the end of the wind structure and developing into a seventh finger which was not connecting to the membrane as two horns pierced through back of his head and out almost a foot, along with more silver spikes down each vertebrae in his back.
“Joseph, you’re half way there, we’ll be waiting outside. In about 7 minutes you ‘ll be a dragon.” Dr. Olborn said as he and Mirjana were able to place him into a containment room to finish his change. Gently setting the now dragon-human hybrid onto the floor, the transformations now going into over load, Dr. Olborn closed the door.
Joseph now clinching his stomach as his tail burst out from his spine going to the same length as him. The tip extending out from the skin and scales in a silver tip. His legs bustling as they gained muscle mass. His neck stretching out to almost 30 centimeters as his ears starched out into triangles as a secondary set of horns came through below his first set growing to a third of the main’s horns length. His face began to stretch out as his muzzle into a blunt point spading and flatting his tongue, as the last of his brown hair fell onto the white rubber like floor.
After 8 more minutes Joseph began to wake up on. Placing his new four feet and stretched from his head to his tail tip like a cat while flapping his new wings. Each flap gave Joseph a tug of lift, teasing him to take off. After several more flaps he began to flap more fiercely. Then the last unthinkable events happed, Joseph's last toe left the floor and was now surrounded by air, wiping off his head he brush off the ashes from earlier reviling a crimson cross etch into his head from the tip of his nose to the middle of his forehead. He couldn't believe it, him, Joseph a few hours ago a normal 18 year-old but
now 3 meter 100 kilogram dragon.
"I can't believe it, it worked," Joseph said as the Mirjana opened the door, "I'm a dragon!"

Haha, no problem. I haven't had any submissions in a while (my desktop totally crapped out on me) and you're not too active yourself, so we haven't had much reason to chat. I'm sure you're busy with better things to do than yap with me anyway, so I wouldn't want to hold you away from anything.
