Use of lion and eagle in their respective heraldic symbolism and positions, with lion on dexter side, the 'honourable' side, and eagle on the right, or sinister side. The lion is in rampant and the eagle in sejant position. The symbols surrounding Sherlock and John are meant to be depicted under the same directional symbolism, though the uppermost, or chief position, is reserved for the symbol most representative of their characters in my opinion.
