Dear Dallas,
You are in Texas. I know you are aware of this because Texas, if nothing else, is possessed of an entirely unironic self-awareness of its own Texasness.
That being the case, can you please tell me why that it is in you, a city in Texas, that one is able to find such an epic gay dance club, the likes of which cannot be found here, in Gay Mecca?
Please respond at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
San Francisco
So I took this picture out at a gay club in Dallas called Station 4. This is a shot of the main dance floor taken from one of the upstairs rooms that overlooks it.
I'm really happy with how this came out. If you haven't been to S4, then it might be hard to appreciate the fact that I managed to capture the lights doing this, since their lighting system is all sorts of crazy-insane and doesn't exactly 'hold still' for nice pretty photos.
And seriously, as much as the above 'letter' is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, I've never been to a gay club that blew my mind to the extent this one did. I am super jealous that Dallas gets something like this and the Bay Area doesn't.

I had only even been to the Gayborhood in Dallas once before, a little over a year ago, and it was during lunchtime on a weekday, so I didn't really get a good impression of what it was really like.
Needless to say, going out on an actual Saturday night to an actual club definitely changed my perceptions. And man, they really DO do everything bigger in Texas.

I was surprised at how few really hip gay clubs there are in PDX. It's more of a bar scene up here, the local brews are the attraction and the dance floor is a side show (sometimes in more ways than one).
Then again, it's still better than Little Rock. But somehow I was thinking if anywhere in Texas had something like this, it'd be Austin.
Also, hope you got a chance to say hi to
fuzzwolf,
teiran, and
savrin while you were down that way.

I looked up numbers for gay neighborhoods in different US cities, and I was surprised to see that Dallas was in the Top 10, population-wise, and Austin wasn't. Apparently they're pretty happening there.
And I got to see Fuzz and Teiran, as well as a few other local friends, but since I was busy with a convention for most of the weekend, I didn't see as many folks as I ideally might have wanted to. That might be a separate trip.

Fair. Maybe I am biased since my family comes from Fort Worth, but my only experiences with Dallas so far have been of a small downtown core made entirely of concrete and surrounded by freeway, with segregated sprawl as far as the eye can see. Maybe I just need to look harder for cool stuff.
BTW Cops in Texas still raid gay bars (or did as recently as 2010).

Ok that sounded pointlessly harsh, and I'm sorry for that. The last time I was in Dallas was for an awful wedding and that probably colors my view of the place. I do know that despite Texas being what it is Dallas does have a pretty huge gay community, though I will prefer the coasts any day.
