Maybe once you know how to start you should just draw a pony
and not use a reference anymore?
I say this because maybe you are getting frustrated because you are making stuff that does not
look like the reference stuff.
To me it looks like Applejack, most folks would agree.
You should finish it.

Actually, I've been trying to move away from the official style. I don't know how to do so and get something that looks good, though.
In this case, to me the head and body just don't seem to go together. Like I copy and pasted the head on or something. Plus, I haven't a clue what I was doing with the pose or clothing.

Looks like Aj is dancing in her bedroom to her fav country western song or maybe its country western rap straight out of Ponyton!
She is wearing panties and a tank top.
It would be cool to have a background too, a bedroom would be nice.
Try not to abandon stuff because you will never finish anything, fix what you don't like or just carry on and finish.
I don't even bother with style, folks tell me I have one but I can't see it.
At least for the 3d stuff, 2d, no one says anything about my pony stuff yet.
They did like the sky in one picture.
I post my 3d stuff on DA, this site is probably going to be just for pony stuff and the more x rated stuff.
I have a picture in my head and I want to do it, I go for it.
I try to do my best but I do not go too OCD because the stuff I might be obsessing over might mean nothing to viewers.
Am a million miles from being good.
So I just keep working on stuff everyday and each picture finished means I get better.
You want to move away from the official style, look at what other people have done.
Have megs and megs of pony pictures as references, maybe you should get some too.
The nice thing about the references is that you can see how far people go from the
official style and its still recognizable. Kamicheetah, Jon Joseco, Slugbox, King Cheetah all have different styles but you still can recognize any of their MLP chars. A lot of these people have FA and DA accounts.
I know a bunch of sites that might help with reference stuff.
Let me know and I can get you some links.
Can see the problem with the head and neck, wonder if you can use photoshop or some other 2d app and select/move the body down or select/move the head up?

Hm. Yeah, I can see it working a little better when you put it that way. If I were to go with that, I'd still tweak the pose and expression a bit, though.
I've been trying to work on backgrounds, but I'm splitting my free time between drawing and some other creative projects, and, due to my job, free time is a bit limited right now. I'll think about it though.
Hey, I've finished about half the things I've posted on here, so apparently not. :P
As far as style... every piece of art you make or see has a "style".
My pony folder is 1.96 gb. That's 2007 "megs", and it's ever growing. I'd say that's not my problem. :P Drawing cartoons of any sort has ever been a struggle for me - there is, quite literally, an art to stylizing things, and it's one that I understand very poorly.

My pony folder is not that big, MUST SCOUR INTERNET FOR MORE PONY STUFF!
If ponibooru is still up they have a bunch of torrents so you can download their collection.
Being able to look at something and pull out the parts that define it is a skill that takes time and work to do.

Backgrounds are great but then I am used to doing them.
Maybe you could switch to doing landscapes for a while?

Yeah but I want my style nao!
I know what AJ says, I have to wait and keep making stuff better.
*Kicks apple*
What?
I am not eating stuff off the ground.
Maybe knowing your own style is one of those advanced level art things.

I have a picture that has been sitting in WIP mode since December 5, 2011.
The subject is supposed to be a combo of Wayne Barlow's demon and Pinky Pie.
Have to model up the subject of the picture but the eyes are a problem, they are supposed to be sunken into the head and I have been having problems modeling the head right.
Good luck with your projects.
So far I have made 2 pictures of Celestia and I made her head too fat but I can't find any refs of her without her mane.
Hopefully she won't send me to the mo
