I loved everything about that anime except Shinji

I fail to believe that anyone granted such destructive power could stay a lil' bitch for so long.

you cannot advance kind of makes up for it, he gradually grows a pair in it and actually makes the effort to be superhero pilot as opposed to letting unit 01 go apeshit and do all of the work
And even though I agree that he was a bit of a buzzkill, I'm going to play devils advocate a little and say that he is just what was needed. There has been a constant underlying theme of pubescent insecurity,family frustrations,and ascension in the bulk of Gainax's series.So Shinji's role as a whiny cowardly protagonist is pretty much th perfect puzzle piece for the original series.
