What is this you are looking at? My new hobby!
Some months ago I saw one of these that someone had made, it's a abacus made from a grip of identical Magic: The Gathering lands, but what they did was cut them out and stacked them so that the artwork became 3D objects. I fell in love and my insane artist self went "I WANT TO MAKE ONE!"
And really, it was not hard to find 13-15 of the same land, hell, between me and my BF alone I found a total of 8 doable sets of cards that I have either done or going to make, and more to come! Yes, I am a MTG player :3 Also, 80% of the cutting part was done on the side WHILE PLAYING and taking names.
It's hella addicting, and so far, I have made a total of 7 of these guys, from basic forests, mountains and swamps, to even a Boros Garrison (to which my roommate snagged the day it was dry.)
What is sad is, photos can NOT capture the dimensions and details I etch into the cards, but I hope you guys can get an idea :3 I swear it's hard to take pictures of this with the camera I have, I could not figure out the macro and so had to really play and trick it, and still, only these 3 shots were the best ones.
This is one of two I have left after my con, they sold way better then I expected (Sadly I didn't take pictures of them before hand,) and maybe my fave just cause of the bridge and layering all on the right side.
This one is up on my Etsy now.
- How many cards does it take?
It takes at least 12 cards to be a working abacus, but I like to stick with 14, feels good in the hand and gives a great range of depth.
- How annoying is it to get 14 of the same card?
So far, it's just a little time consuming going through 7 boxes of land that we already have. But we keep them by color so it's not that hard.
- I have man hands and don't want to break it!
Seriously, you could drop the thing on the floor and there should be no problems! Each one weighs less then a D20 (no joke,) and are so rock hard that you could only really maybe scratch the edges and bring out a little of the white underneath the print. Even the design work like branches that hover above the background become very ridged with the glue used. But working the beads could take a little getting use to. One of the cards in your hand makes a great pick.
- How long does each one take?
If I took a guess, maybe 3-5 hours each not counting the drying time. I've not timed myself properly because it's just a hobby I do on the side of other happenings.
- Are you selling them?
Yes, I do sell them at either conventions or on my Etsy shop. http://www.etsy.com/shop/TigressGraphics
- Do you make customs?
Right now this is JUST a hobby and don't plan on taking any direction commissions or on demand orders in the near future. I draw and sew for business now, this is a hobby, I would like to keep loving it. Also, with customs comes the demand for a specific piece of artwork, and that is more then I want to delve into myself.
- What if I have the cards already and want to get a commissions?
Save those and we can talk later on about what I'm doing. I might have you mail me the cards plus a few spares for "oopsies."
- Can you do ANY card?
I will do more then land for sure! BUT! Not ALL cards can be made into 3D objects and make sense.
- Hey, I have a TON of land I was going to toss, do you want it/buy it?
Donations I can't really say no to and would pay the shipping; buying is another matter. You can check with me, but chances are, I'm not looking to acquire more anyway be it donation or buying.
- Have you ever thought about mixing cards?
As in, I take a planes for a background and maybe use a forest in the foreground? Yes, I have thought about doing that, but it can be much harder to do, also I like to make sure the original artist's name is visible, and I would have to splice the background one to the front. I'm an artist. I don't want my name to disappear, so I respect other artists! :D

I'm considering to do customs later on, but for now I'm just making them as I find lands that I want to work with, I will be doing all basic types as well as some different ones. Like next up on my list is a Terramorphic Expanse, and I have done a Boros Garrison.
I will take requests though if someone just wants a Forrest or a Planes and not a exact art piece.

Those are some awesome cards! But for right now, I'm just doing what we already have and not wanting to go and "Buy Land" to do this, because really, WHO BUYS LAND?? XD It's bad enough I put money into the beads, wire and sealer.
But we shal see what happens, if I some how find 14 of those for next to nothing, I might try it.

We'll maybe work something out later ;) I need to figure out what I'm doing long term with these, because really, it's just a hobby I do for myself. Asking $20 each one is NOT a for profit deal cause, taking a guess, at least 4 hours go into each one. I don't time myself, cause it's a fidget thing I do while waiting up to 5 mins for my turn to come around again :P
But I will get back to you if I feel the need for some challenge :D

Actually, you would be surprised. There are people that when creating decks will buy land lots so that they don't have to take their decks apart each time. Plus because they are so common you can get like 20 lands for a dollar or something like that.
In fact, I have some land I was gonna put on Ebay to see what I could get for it. I have to count again and see how many I have for sale and I will check Ebay to see the general amount that you can get per dollar. But if you are interested let me know. I even have land from Innistrad that I got when I got the Dark Acensions fat pack if you would like that as well. I believe that can go for like $2 or $3 on ebay but I will double check. That is if you are interested.
Though I really do think these things are cool, and I might want to get one myself.

OH MAH GUH These are so cool! I know you said you got the idea from someone else's, but you did GREAT with these, they're amazing! I can't wait to see pictures of the other lands (provided you make more). I love forests and oceans and ... O.O OMG, SNOW-COVERED MANA!!! *cries*
Sorry, this is just way too cool for me not to be getting all stoked.

I would love to see a Skithiryx one of these. It would cost a fortune to get the cards, though. T^T
I want a Forest one for my boyfriend. XD
Could you tell me what kind of glue you use??....
And the sealer?
Feel free to ignore me. It's just my boyfriend and I play MTG a lot.
It's how we met each other so I thought it would be the perfect gift for him.

Agreed, that would look AWESOME as a counter- but a expensive and sad end for such a powerful card.
I used Matte Mod Podge to put the cards together. It's also a sealer in of it self and drys rock hard. If you do try to make your own, I wish you well! But I will be making more lands soon enough if you just want to wait. Forest's seem to be everyone favorite choice right now o_o
