Bird’s Eye View.
The sun slowly rose over my home in the early hours of the morning, but I was already awake as the metal dogs had begun barking their way along the hot blackness. The fur-less dogs were also out with their odd tall dog friends in their bright colors and seeming life-providing white ear strings. But all of this was still annoying as it always woke me up too early. At least the metal dogs seemed to go into hibernation every five days, but it never lasted. Always letting me think they were done before barking up my tree again.
Sitting back in the collection of stately twigs I tried to get a little more sleep, but squawks and a loud bang made me hop to the side to look over. Two of the metal dogs had hit each other, and the tall dogs were clambering out of the ears and beginning to squawk at each other. It was clear that the short one from the dog in front wouldn’t last long; he didn’t have his ear strings in. The one from the back metal dog had them in very deep though, and the short tall dog was flailing his featherless arms at them in the others head and raising his squawking to a louder level as they gestured back and fourth.
This meant of course that sleep would now be beyond my talonted grasp. Rolling my neck a little, I hopped up the edge of my noble nest and slowly leaned forward until I began to fall. Spreading my majestic wings I aimed for a spot just between the two crashed metal dogs and slid right between them, distracting the one with the strings enough for the short one to yank them out. These dogs were certainly violent if they were willing to pull the plug on each other like that…
Regardless, off I flew toward the breakfast spot. During this early time it was generally empty from the dogs in all shapes. Maybe the large glowing M was a deterrent until it was bright enough outside for the glow to not be so bright. Slowly gliding over the warm air from the black hotness I made my way toward the M, some of my fellows joining me in the journey to our normal food spot. I only gave them a little nod, trying to ignore their attempts at trying to have a discussion. Such trivialities were beneath me when the goal of food was on the mind.
Eventually they stopped trying such futile attempts as the M came into view. Flapping to get a little more height, I tilted my wings a little to begin circling over the large building. As I scoped out the outside for food sources, I spotted several black shapes below me already…That was odd. Folding myself in closer I dove down to get a better look, opening again once I reached the M itself to land on top and take stock of what was happening on ground level. I only gave an annoyed squawk to what my eyes fell upon.
It was that bully Crawl and his murder gang with him. I didn’t even have to ask to know that they wouldn’t let me near the golden sustenance. But I sat on the sign, just watching them until Crawl looked up from his stolen feast to me. I should have thought that blue would stand out against the yellow, but I didn’t, I was too filled with anger to notice a thing like that. At least I noticed him lift off and head toward me before he was upon me. Quickly hopping back off the M sign I opened one of my wings to attempt a quick turn around then the other to fly away quickly, but loud caws and the heavy beating of wings told me that Crawl was right on my tail.
“Get back here Blue!” The grated voice screeched as I dove low toward the ground, waiting till the last moment to try and pull up, but the shadow over me told me that Crawl hadn’t fallen for that, and he was waiting for me to come back up. Halting my upward flight I kept flying low, but the larger shadow of Crawl wasn’t getting any bigger. He was just waiting for me.
“We’ll see how fanciful you feel after your feathers are spread across the ground!” The feathered windbag just wouldn’t let up. Or let me up for that matter. We continued our odd little flight over the M’s hard black grass until we reached the familiar green grass. Glancing down I quickly tilted my wings at an angle for a sharp turn, Crawls cry made it clear that he was still giving chase. Diving as low as I dared from the still low position I maintained I headed for the trees around the large green area, my shadow beginning to grow larger as Crawl dove down. But I would make it to the trees in time. Aiming for a spot I could see but I knew Crawl couldn’t from his higher vantage point I flapped up a little bit then swiftly tucked my wings in to avoid damage as I sailed through the air. But that angry bird Crawl didn’t even seem to care about damage to himself as he followed right after me at a downward angle.
Due to my careful positioning I flew straight through the small hole in the tree top as Crawl smashed through it instead. But I couldn’t spend the time to look back. Opening my wings I flapped quickly to gain more height, the crowing of Crawl still audible over the breaking of branches, but then I heard flapping. He wasn’t done yet…
Gaining new found fear and as such speed as the flapping behind me intensified I needed to find a new place to run to escape him. The Woodpecker. That noise maker would be out by now and his home would serve as the perfect escape. But it was on the other side of the large grass. All this thinking gave Crawl the time to regain his flight and begin after me. He may have been hurt and maybe not, but that didn’t change the fact he was still going. And now he would have a reason to be mad at me beside just being a bully.
We wheeled and dived back and fourth, Crawl getting closer with each successive evasion. He may have been bigger, but due to the crash he wasn’t all there and it wasn’t as hard as it would normally be to dodge his charges. But he had also eaten, and I could feel my wings tiring as we chased and ran. But I was almost at the tree! Only problem would be the entrance, Woodpecker was a tiny thing and I would have to work to get in, giving Crawl plenty of time to attack. It was time to be a little sneaky.
I began to slow down and sink toward the ground, letting my head droop a little while still keeping eyes on the base of the tree that had salvation in its branches. I couldn’t tell if Crawl was still going full tilt but even if I continued he would get me on the entrance. Looking back under my wing as I let me head droop even lower I was elated to see that Crawl was slowing down too, and that his left wing tip was bent a odd angle.
Good, jerk deserved it for hoarding all the food. Finally reaching the ground I made sure to tuck my wings in tightly so I could avoid damage as I landed then rolled, trying to add to the illusion that he had won. But after stopping I got to my feet as I turned around to face Crawl who also landed. You could just see his smugness as he strutted forward. His chest puffed out and his beak jerking back a fourth as he stopped just his wings length away.
Thankfully, before he could give any victory chorus one of the young dogs that frequented the park made some odd screech of his own and caused Crawl to look over. Quickly hopping backwards I took to the air and shot straight up toward the branches. Now that I could finally get a good look at my escape I noticed that the hole was larger then I thought it would be, so the degrading wasn’t needed. Great. I had landed on the branch just under the hole as I heard Crawl begin the flap after me. But he was way to slow to stop me before I hopped into my new safety hole. Making sure I was well back from the entrance it was my turn to look smug as a very angry crow visited my tree. He tried in stupid desperation to reach me with his beak but size wasn’t on his side this time.
He soon left, and I savored the victory, until hunger and wing pain brought me back to the real world…stupid Crawl
