Never a sound nor a footprint found yet it still placed curiousity, fear, and anger into the hearts of those who lived near it's swamp. Travelling under the cover of darkness or a heavy fog, it would often lure lost wanderers astray or attract food by it's soft glow. The Lakota called it "Iktomi" or Trickster Spirit as it was very cunning and left no trace, leaving inhabitants wondering if it was a ghost or a demon.
It was said that it used to be a faithful canine companion to an indian shaman but died trying to protect it's master. The shaman was very saddened by the loss and pled with the Great Spirits to take the body into the earth. The shaman placed the body into a hole near the swamp he lived by and set a talasman in next to it to help guide the poor creature in the Spirit Realm. The talasman contained the spirit of a cougar for strength, the wing feather of a hawk for swiftness, a firefly for lighting the way, and a piece of spectrolite as a token of the shamans care and admiration.
The spirit, blessed with such a talasman, rose from the hole and went in search of it's master but never found him. Many years it searched but was unable find that which it searched for. It still roams today, it's cries and howls heard echoing thorugh the deepest depths of the Great Lakes marshes.
Rumor has it that Iktomi resides somewhere deep within the Southern Michigan swamplands but no one knows for sure. Locals in any area of a large swamp have been warned to not let their children out at night for fear they may be led off by this mysterious creature.
No one knows for sure what exactly Iktomi really is, or if it even exsists. Nevertheless, local authorities have a large reward for anyone that brings in Iktomi.... alive or dead...
