So I properly played Silent Hill for the first time a little while back, but I ran into some trouble in the school. A discussion with
not-fun on Twitter earlier basically taught me that ammo is very precious in this game, and that it's better to run past enemies than fight them.
This is what I imagine the conversation to look like in my head.

YEAH NOT TOO FAR OFF
the pipe is good for range. i'm trying to remember the SH1 weapons but you know me and memory. KINDA FUZZY.
i think you get an axe at some point which does much better damage. harry has a rather...unique swing. the controls are always going to give you grief with that. but yeah save ammo like it's made of pure mcguffinium.
on later playthroughs you can get stuff like a katana and a chainsaw, but first time through i think zar leaned on the axe a lot to survive.
my memory is more useful when it comes to sh2 and sh4, to be honest. but i might be able to help on some puzzles if you get stuck.

OH also enemies are attracted to your light. if you feel saucy (or really, really want to avoid enemies) you can switch it off and run around in the dark for a while. of course you might run right into the arms of something, but yeah. light helps them zero in on you.
i can't remember if the school or the hospital is where you get a squeezy bottle but KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED AND GRAB IT WHEN YOU CAN. IF YOU MISS IT, NO GOOD ENDING FOR YOU.

Good to know. I knew you could turn the light on and off but I didn't know if it had much use XD Again, much like Amnesia (Although in Amnesia, it can be a damned-if-you-do damned-if-you-don't thing. Standing in the light or holding out your lantern will alert the monsters to your position, but hiding in the dark for too long will cause your sanity to drop, which will also alert monsters to your position.)
I'll keep that in mind :o And I'll look for the squeezy bottle too!

yeah. on easy or normal, the light isn't THAT much of a difference maker to your overall survival (though you can't look at the map without a light) but on harder modes it's almost essential to run around in complete darkness.
just a good thing to know if you're low on hp with no healing or somethin'.
