My two new female fancy rats. They are about 6-8 months old (Artemis I'm guessing being older as she is larger) but both are indeed female... and yet they are opposites of each other. Here's how...
Artemis... Unlike almost all female ratties I have heard about, she doesn't go very far. Once she's on your shoulder, she snuggles down and is as happy as can be (as you can see she's snuggled close to my neck). Not crazy of beign picked up, she endures and is extremely happy to be around you once perched. Definitely boss of the tank as every time Dimitri tries to prank her, she takes chase, flipping Dimitri over onto her back and tags her back, often grooming her a little after. Is always there to greet you with reaching paws.
Dimitri... Most definitely my prankster/ADHD rat. She's EVERYWHERE. Back and forth she will run, often greeting you in the middle. Once picked up she's so happy she doesn't know what to do with herself. She'll nose your ear, burrow under your hair, or be distracted by the slightest of things. Extremely clever though, very intellegent. Each new thing I hand her she figures out and moves onto the next thing, seeking a challenge.
Both girls are very sweet and gentle, often after pettign behing ther ear they will brux (grind their teeth, rat equivalent of a cat purring) and lick/nibble affectionately, and talk quietly (low squeaks or clucks). So far their favorite place is buried deep in my hood or snuggled onto my shoulder. I've owned an array of aimals and I must say rats are some of the cleanest critters I've ever encountered. They both have a soft almost earthy/corn husk smell.
If they nibble a little harder than preferred, I've discovered if you squeak (make a short kissing noise) to them, they will realize "hey, that hurts!" and they stop immediately, often licking the spot shortly, almost as to apologize.
At a first glance the two may not seem to be anything more than pa pair of fuzzy things with legs, randomly bouncing everywhere... After being with them a few days you can really start to see a personality all of it's own. Gives a new perspective and respect to something so small.

CongRATS on your new girls!!! I've always wanted to own my own rats after taking care of my teacher's girls 7 years ago. I'm now lucky enough to have two sweet boys, Hideki and Morris, and you are right! They are the cleanest and smartest animals I've owned. They just got Yule stockings yesterday and had fun tearing them up to get to their treats.
