Ammut, of Egyptian mythology. She is part crocodile, part lion, and part hippo - a representation of the three animals most feared by the ancient Egyptians. She is most often depicted in the Hall of the Dead beside the scales upon which the deceased's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, a symbol of "divine truth and justice" or, more simply, whether that person has lived their life in honesty, in integrity as much as s/he was able. If the heart, which is identical to the soul in Egyptian myth, proved lighter than the feather, the person could move on to the afterlife. If, however, it was heavier, Ammut was said to devour the soul and destroy it.
