Species Chocobo

Got into a rant a while ago how there's no suitable chocobo character in the whole Final Fantasy series since they got put in the game. Hell, even MOOGLES got Montblanc and got turned into this bad-ass monster hunter guild leader in FFXII. I think its high time chocobos get a "badass" character.
So I made my own OC to go alongside an idea for a "FFXV", this is my girlfriend's version.
I'll upload my drawing (yes I drew, and I'm kinda bad at it) once I can get it over to her to get it inked and colored. It'll double as a reference in case other ppl want to draw him, too.
Backstory/Explanation:
Aexis was a Captain tasked to go in with a group of soldiers to apprehend this one warlock.
Fighting ensues, Warlock arrested, but as he's hauled out something got activated or damaged in the fight and was gonna pew-pew him. His chocobo "partner" (he refused to ever use him as a mount) tries to shove him out of the way but they both get hit. "Flight of Dragons" style merging ensues.
After managing his new condition he decides to attempt reporting back in with whoever set him out, and the jerk beaureaucrats "demote" him due to his specie change because let's face it, can't have a chocobo actually LEADING troops. Total morale crusher.
Frankly, this gets him pissed and he abandons a unit while suppressing a gang war, only to get ganged up on by some members and the leader. Gets pretty badly hurt and passes out to wake up meeting the 2nd main character (Caessia).
Rest of the story is about 3-5 years later, where he lives with her and runs into another defector (Xax), a guy that ran out on the military when they banned unarmed combat and its training and he just decided he was gonna duck in their particular house and lie low.
The rest, is history and up to Square writers. That's all they get for free.
As for his "vest" he's wearing, its a cruel bit of irony. Out of human impulse he hated not having clothes, and the only thing that was big enough happened to have the seal of the military that kinda kicked him in the face (a bladed cross). Any port in a storm, I guess.
Hard to see, but he also is wearing a string necklace with a bead the color of his eyes, I wanted "FFXV" to have lots of hints at the GOOD FF games (everything before 11), so I asked it to look like Aeris's "holy" materia (pale green).
